    1. This is great there’s been so much talk about the need to have upgrades to the Cork limerick road or the Waterford limerick road. Lots of talk of the need to facilitate lorries and take them out of towns.

We have a far more energy efficient way to move freight and existing lines on which to send them.

It would take a government prepared to invest in intermodal though and I can’t see a ff ot fg government looking to re orient from private independent businesses to rail freight.

What in the f*ck is going on here?

44 million for 150 wagons means each wagon is costing nearly €300,000.

Wagons weigh 20 tonnes and steel is currently at around €800 a tonne.

That means the raw materials for the wagon is roughly 16,000 euro.

While I understand wheels and bogies would be more expensive, they certainly won’t be €284,000 more expensive.

Can anybody shed any more light in this?

Well hopefully it won’t be like the pocket wagons bought to speed up container freight and then the safety dept. wouldn’t pass them as safe to travel at the higher speed.
