i mean this isnt nesserly a bad thing
Neverending greed…..
Ah, introducing those charges would just push more people to piracy
These assholes are really getting creative with ways to express their disdain for the average Irish person.

The levy wouldn’t have gotten us any better content.
🏴☠️
Is is a replacement for tv licence or in addition to?
Who was the expert advice, someone in RTE?
What I would like to see a push for more Irish content, countries like France have a requirement that some of profit should go towards native content.
We do already have the EU Audiovisual Media Services Directive (AVMSD) which means at least 30% of the catalogue has to be EU content. Which I think is why we’ve had some great shows like Lupin, Dark or Lilyhammer.
I’d rather see that, than a Netflix levy that goes towards RTE spending it on another shit escapade.
It’s about time elected politicians started making decisions and stopped hiding behind “reports”.
“Is there anything to be said for another tax?” Feck off
>However, it has decided not to go ahead with a so-called ’Netflix levy’, citing the impact on consumers.
Why is everyone losing their mind, they’re not doing it.
I think it’s worth starting, becuase the headline is misleading :

Absolute waste of time doing a report really if you’re going to ignore it based on nothing really, but I think the wait and see option is the best.
I absolutely agree that no fee should be introduced. Either find a way to tax the companies themselves for operating here or do as Netflix suggest and give them an obligation to increase direct investment here. Id much prefer Netflix and the likes to be publishers here greenlighting work that is given to Irish production houses rather than trying to take money off the consumer to hand back to Rte/TG4/CNAM.
The tide is turning on Streaming Platforms now as they increasingly shaft consumers with price hikes and new tiers, there’s a big global grab for content too and the US changing tariffs on media produced outside the country will further affect things.
“It said such an intervention would supplement financing available and permit domestic producers to “further pursue creative excellence while also forging more international partnerships”, which in turn would “enhance cultural diversity and help the domestic production industry” while offering a path to “improved financial sustainability”.
Jesus Christ, shades of being in a redundancy meeting and hearing phrases like “strategic downsizing”, “tactical growth implementation” and “revised capacity management to ensure continued success”
Bonus points for sandwiching in “Cultural Diversity”, that is honestly impressive to somehow get that in there.
Fair play to the government for having none of it, didn’t expect that tbh.
A “Netflix levy” would be perceived by the current US administration as an aggressive digital services tax. The Government is desperately trying to avoid poking the bear, so there is not the remotest possibility that it would introduce such a levy voluntarily under current circumstances.
