Maybe she should get in a “czar” to fix it. Like the Housing Minister needs a czar now to do what he should be doing.

Hospital security is one of the worst gigs in the industry. I’ve heard so many horror stories from some of my colleagues.

Not wanting to take responsibility for problems within the health care system is a common thing among politicians

How would it be the responsibility of hospital management? Are they expecting the Minister to micromanage this particular situation?

If a nurse or doctor is on a ward or A&E or anywhere in the hospital/care centre and a patient takes a swing at them (for whatever reason). How is “security” going to prevent this? Does every single healtcare worker get a bouncer?

It is unfortunate, but there is a risk you get hit when dealing with disturbed patients – be they “special needs” patients or be they ordinary people in pain and lashing out.

For anything else, I.e. malicious attacks, there should be a zero-tolerence and security should be called.

Dundalk and monaghan are both barely hospitals at this stage, its probably a call for funding to employ security, as far as i know neither have any security at all.

A hospital worker told me recently that their hospital has been capped at a specific number of staff members and are only able to hire a new staff member when an old one leaves. But the number isn’t a specific department. So if you’re stuck for nurses and a security officer retires, you might hire a nurse instead and now the security team is stretched thinner. The whole thing is a mess
