For the third year in a row, our team has been documenting the lives and stories of Ukraine’s military personnel. What unites almost every hero across different branches of the armed forces is a shared conviction: the infantry plays a decisive role in this war.

An army aviation pilot told us that his primary mission is to provide cover for the infantry. UAV operators explained how they work to eliminate threats before they reach the front line, reducing the need for close combat. A unit commander described how infantry held the line in the Serebriansky forest. All of them agree — no technology can replace the presence of a soldier. A trench is only truly ours when a Ukrainian infantryman is in it.
