Well it’s just become a hell of a lot more expensive to hire/keep UK staff.
I had to let the 2 people I employed go and offshore the jobs to Philippines as it just wasn’t viable anymore. On plus side my costs have gone drastically down so the company is now a lot more profitable which means more corp tax for the government.
The company I work for is still hiring but still offering the same starter wages they were 5 years ago.
Funnily enough we are struggle to find skilled staff, nothing to do with the wages tho.
Meanwhile, in the real world:
There are 33,996,000 people employed in the UK, which is 206,000 higher than the previous quarter and 683,000 higher than the previous year – ONS April 2025 (Release date: 15 April 2025)
Unemployment is up slightly (up 114,000 compared to a year ago) however, the overall employment rate is 75.1% which is 0.2% higher than the previous quarter and 0.5% higher than the previous year – ONS April 2025 (Release date: 15 April 2025)
Economic inactivity rate is 21.4% which is 0.2% lower than the previous quarter and 0.7% lower than the previous year – ONS April 2025 (Release date: 15 April 2025)
Annual growth in employees’ average earnings for regular earnings was 5.9%. Annual average regular earnings growth was 5.9% for the private sector and 5.7% for the public sector – ONS April 2025 (Release date: 15 April 2025)

They managed to get the hatchet well and truly swinging under the tories and it’s too late to stop it now becuase Labour don’t have the spine to step in proactively.
Expect RM service to continue its decline over the next year as the Czech billionaire dude completes his take over.
The mail and parcels sections will be seperated, all the profitable parts and tax-bought infrastructure will be kept, and the useless and non-profitable parts will be dumped on the government’s doorstep to bail out, which they will have to do because mail delivery is still heavily protected by law and the Lords would never let that change.
RM employs well over 100k people. There’s going to be massive redundancies and a flood of middle aged jobseekers who have done no other job in decades.

We’ve had the first round. There’s got to be a second. But I think it is industry specific.
Boarded up shops are turning into vape or barbers/nail shops. So there is money about.
I got a promotion by name only. My hours are cut and my pay remains the same as before.
Well (as my mother told me) Asda is still advertising for delivery drivers. They currently have 42 people for 16 vans. Not quite sure how that works when the government wants everyone to work 35 hours equivalent per week
The government would probably have received less fallout for reversing the four percentage point reduction in employee NI…
I work in retail and in the last 3 years we’ve lost 12 people and only hired 2 in that time. The same across the company there’s been a “hiring ban” and a squeeze on payroll.
