“leading academics fleeing Donald Trump’s (education) threats”

Why, it’s just like Europe in the 1930s, but with the academics going the other way.

I can’t imagine how this looks to the many, many Irish academics who’ve left to work in the UK to have any career at all.

I’m an american engineer who lost my job in renewable energy thanks to ol’ donny, and I’m also an Irish citizen. But salaries in Ireland are 1/3 what they are here, and there’s a housing crisis to worry about too.

Irish academia is already on it’s knees from chronic underfunding, precarious part time contracts and high levels of burnout from increased workloads because of unofficial freezes on hiring.

The fact the Government are proposing this shows how utterly out of touch they are with the sector.

I posted this elsewhere but I think its worth repeating.

This might sound cynical but is a great academic going to be better at teaching then a normal academic? What would a university be paying for other then the name?

As someone who works daily with these “academics” save your money.

Its a good idea – new talent to educate students.

I work in Higher education as support staff and I must say this is very insulting seeing as we need to scrape and fight for every morsel of funding given to us.

The money would be better spent building dedicated on-campus student accommodation, as this is the single greatest, fundamental threat to the Irish Third Level system.

Immediately upon graduation these people are the ones directly driving the economy, not washed up, and possibly politically entrenched, academics who couldn’t make it in industry ( I know that was a sweeping generalisation).

But if there is a choice between practically helping people, by creating additional student accommodation, or creating new levels of bureaucracy and public sector bloating, Iknow which one the government will choose.

Why don’t you pay your nurses higher wages while you’re at it.
