It’s true, it was delivered in a different place and Keir Starmer is in fact a different man to Enoch Powell (for example, Enoch Powell had a mustache).
Other than that, it’s a fair comparison, and a sad place to be in.
Powell’s speech:
>But while, to the immigrant, entry to this country was admission to privileges and opportunities
eagerly sought, the impact upon the existing population was very different. For reasons which
they could not comprehend, and in pursuance of a decision by default, on which they were never
consulted, they found themselves made strangers in their own country. .
Starmer’s speech:
>In a diverse nation like ours, and I celebrate that, these rules become even more important. Without them, we risk becoming an island of strangers, not a nation that walks forward together.
So one is saying those living here have already found themselves to be strangers, the other is saying those living here risk finding themselves to be strangers.
Not “completely different” there, Cooper.
Last week all sorts of labour supporters were telling us that Starmer was a master communicator who was saying all sorts of dodgy pro-Trump stuff just because buttering up Trump is good politics.
Why is such a master communicator having to roll out people to say, “No, I’m not trying to be Enoch Powell?” this is not the act of a competent politician, let alone a masterful one.
This whole thing is stupid. Making a mountain of fuss over the PM talking about immigration is symptomatic of how we got here.
The speeches are totally different. I don’t remember starmer mentioning rivers of blood once, for example.
This whole thing is stupid as fuck.
Read the entire speech and see if you think it’s remotely comparable to Enoch Powell.
People are literally fixating on part of a single sentence from the speech and ignoring the context entirely.
You either have to be gullible, lazy or brain-dead to genuinely think this was a dog whistle.
Because Powell gave speeches against mass immigration because he was against it, whilst Starmer gives speeches against mass immigration to provide cover for its continuation?
The fact the public have been very open about wanting these changes for years and when Labour so much as takes a step towards them, they’re accused of far-rightism, fascism, racism, putting lives at risk etc. really goes to show the disconnect between the “activist” left and the general public.
If you’re sat there scratching your head why there’s no leftist surge in these tumultuous political times, this affair sums it up pretty nicely.
How we doing with “smash the gangs”? Or has the news cycle moved on and now we’re all about guaranteeing there won’t be enough care workers?
> “In a diverse nation like ours, and I celebrate that, these rules become even more important. Without them, we risk becoming an island of strangers, not a nation that walks forward together.”
I can’t see Enoch saying this to be honest…
My ‘completely different to Enoch Powell’ T-shirt has people asking a lot of questions already answered by my shirt.
The media wonder why everyone is suspicious of them and thinks everything is fake news. Whatever labour do or say they are just moaning.
I think the problem is, noone believes a word he says, he’s been spending the entirety of his career preaching exactly the opposite.
The bit I thought was most interesting was that he admitted that it doesn’t benefit the economy.
That was really the last argument for it, and if even Labour see it now, that’s the end. Better late than never.
It’s fairly clear migrants aren’t welcome in the UK at this point … why hide it
Feel like I’m taking crazy pills watching left leaning people lose the plot over Starmer’s speech.
> Now, in a diverse nation like ours, **and I celebrate that**, these rules become even more important. Without them, we **risk** becoming an island of strangers, not **a nation that walks forward together**.
Starmer is literally **celebrating** our diversity and wants to protect it from the crisis the Tories caused!
The Tories cause the problem. Leave the EU, don’t process asylum seekers, raise net migration from ~200k before 2019 to ~800k…
Then, they sell the solution, the continued isolation of the UK by leaving the ECHR so they can keep eroding our rights. [Rights that Labour are improving, btw.](https://www.lewissilkin.com/insights/2025/04/08/whats-in-the-employment-rights-bill-1)
Starmer’s point that people are ignoring or (wilfully or not) misunderstanding, is that if people don’t have faith in the current immigration system, all that does is foster resentment for immigrants, which feeds nasty parties like Reform.
Powell was anti-immigration and was referring only to the damage it does. Starmer was talking about ensuring migrants are integrated to ensure social cohesion – a much more positive message.
This kinda encapsulates why this countries politics is fucked because you phrase things a certain way or talk about immigration it’s labelled as far right etc. Thanks Labour and soft Tories. Good job.
She honestly shouldn’t even address this. It’s like calling someone a Nazi for wanting border control – never appeal to these degenerates.
People complain about immigration, and then complain about the PM trying to tackle immigration
I’m really not convinced that the people complaining would do anything to move the needle at a general election.
The problem is that most of the people who support tougher migration policies don’t support Labour or Starmer, so they’re never going to give him and praise or credit.
One day the penny is going to drop for the users of this sub that Starmer’s Labour are extremely unpopular and they’re going to be completely baffled as to why despite all the very obvious signs.
They’re heading for electoral wipeout to the degree that many people assume it must be intentional, yet you still get people on here pontificating about how great he is. It’s so far removed from reality it’s not even funny
Pretty much political suicide to provoke the imagery of Enoch Powell.
