From the article: The European Union’s 17th package of sanctions against Russia, agreed on May 14, is being hailed in Brussels as a symbol of steady resolve.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen welcomed the move, insisting it would “keep the pressure high on the Kremlin.”

But outside the EU bubble, critics see it as another incremental move that fails to match the urgency of the moment, and behind closed doors, even EU officials acknowledge the package was watered down during negotiations.

The sanctions package comes at a potentially pivotal moment in Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, announced after the Kremlin once again refused to agree to a full, 30-day ceasefire.

Russia’s counterproposal — direct talks between Kyiv and Moscow in Turkey on May 15, appear to be going ahead but much skepticism remains over Moscow’s genuine desire to advance the peace process being pushed by Ukraine, Europe, and the U.S.

“It’s better than nothing,” Oleksandr Merezhko, a Ukrainian lawmaker and chair of the parliament’s foreign affairs committee, told the Kyiv Independent, adding the package is “not as strong as it should be.”

“My guess is that the EU is waiting to see whether or not (Russian President Vladimir) Putin will start negotiating seriously on a ceasefire,” he said.

**Advisor:** ***”We can easily win by committing to this for 48.2%”***

*Politicians: “Hold up, I have a lot faith in Ukraine! Can we still win by committing merely 30%?”*

**Advisor:** ***”There is even a chance Ukraine could win with 0% commitment, relying on impulsive donations following atrocities. But it would take much longer.”***

Politicians: *”I like 24.1% suddenly, still pretty generous considering my voters.”*

**Advisor:** ***”Would you rather get this done in 2025 or 2030?”***

Politician: *”2030 if it gets me re-elected…”*

At this point, holding back is just insane. You’re just showing to putin you’re afraid to go that extra mile, exactly what he wants to see.

Steady resolved more like a Lifeline to putin. They’re actually proving Trump’s talking points.

No shit…. nothing is as strong as it should be until there are boots on the ground or actual work towards destroying russias capabilities. Europe has failed

I hope that the next UK Sanctions package will have balls to it, sanctioning the entire shadow fleet, sanctioning pharmaceutical and/or Nuclear would be a good next step to really make them feel it

Didn’t the war started in 2022? I mean today, we are in 2025, we already should have come further with “getting sober” of RuZZian energy. Regardless of whether the energy is gaseous or liquid. Still we are trying to “boil the frog”…but tbh., we are just shy to face the consequences. Such a shame. I mean, personally, I still have a gas heating, but in the meantime in 2023, I bought some solar collectors and a wood pellet oven to mitigate my gas consumption. Now I dropped down to ~35% of my pre-2022 gas consumption. Not perfect, okay, but I DID MY JOB…and it was not for free. And in 3 years I will get a heat pump to fully “get rid of fck” gas…where ever it may come from. Because fracking gas could also come from the US(S)A….and they are -from my pov- at least under DJ Dumb not much better than Putler for me 🙂
