    1. Punished for breaking the law, I never thought I would see such a thing in this country

That planning consultant must not understand planning law.

This couple has no one but themselves to blame.

We built a giant mcmansion without planning permission and now they are going to tell us we have to obey the law? How dare they!

Normally I’m on the build build build side but in this case there’s absolutely no reason they couldnt have done it right, they just thought they could get away with it. Send in the bulldozers or an offer to CPO for 2 euro.

Every few months this story comes up but yet it’s still there and there’s been zero enforcement.

They really tried to sneak a little dwelling in didn’t they. Sorry, zero sympathy, taking the piss.

While obviously the couple are at fault for not following planning guidelines and building before they got permission, this once again highlights issues with the planning process. The whole process and series of 5 appeals has dragged out over 15 years. That’s insane.

Frustrated after having previous applications on two different sites also refused, the Murrays responded by building a house that was nearly twice the size of the original dormer they applied for.

Serious fuck you to the council for refusing them lol.

    8. This has been going for 15 years.

      I’ve zero sympathy for them

“It’s their land and they can build what they want” brigade can go fuck themselves

We broke the law by not following planning laws designed mainly for safety and now we’re facing the consequences

Without reading the article: they didn’t have planning permission, did they?

    11. circuitocorto on

Unfortunately I can only read the first 2 paragraph but this is my unpopular opinion, if they proposed a reduction of the size of the house (it seems from 500m² to 250m²) they should go ahead and pay an expensive fine that could then finance the building of other houses people need. It’s not necessary to destroy the whole thing unless the council is looking to get revenge.

He’s a literal planning consultant. Tear it down and fine him.

    13. Hahahahahahahahahahaha

“Look at us, we’re the victims in all this, we only ignored the law and now we’re facing actual consequences – what is this, I thought this was Ireland where we could do what ever the fuck we wanted because we are land owners”

    14. Spirited_Cheetah_999 on

How did this come to light originally, did someone report it or did the council notice a new huge house themselves?

    15. Alastor001 on

I mean, what kind of builder would agree to work without permission? That’s stupid also. Not just the owners.

If the house is already there, not being danger or nuisance (it’s rural, who cares) why not just leave it / CPO and sell someone else? It’s not like there is anything actually wrong with it.

There are countless houses that had planning permission originally and now are rotting, being a useless waste of space and an actual danger to public. Those are the ones that need to be demolished.

    16. Nickthegreek28 on

Is this still going on it should have been demolished ages ago

    17. Longjumping_Test_760 on

Could understand to a certain extent if they had built a 3 or 4 bed standard single storey house that blends in with the countryside but what they built is a real finger up to all planning and society in general.
Saying that they should have respected the planners decision and not built anything before receiving PP.

    18. eboy-888 on

No sympathy for these people at all. Bulldoze it and set an example finally.
No repercussions for breaking the law and this should be the line drawn under a new era of enforcement. (Wishful thinking)

    19. Automatic-Top-4753 on

I don’t agree with what they have done and they should face consequence of that. Arrogance/ignorance is no excuse.
I do find the hypocrisy funny in terms of people bloc reaction. Remember that cafe in Connemara a few weeks ago cribbing that they were shut down. But it’s the same thing. They decided to do what they want about planning.
