Surely the Gardaí aren’t seriously following tips from psychics. The article would suggest, however, that they do, regularly. And it looks like so far this has lead to, er, nothing.

“It is not unusual for psychics to offer their services to gardaí in high-profile missing persons cases. It is understood a number of psychics have come forward offering assistance in the disappearance of Kerry farmer [Michael Gaine](https://www.irishtimes.com/ireland/2025/05/05/michael-gaine-case-rallying-community-in-kerry-remembers-missing-man/) who disappeared on March 21st, last.

In 1996, gardaí investigating the disappearance of [Josephine “Jo Jo” Dullard](https://www.irishtimes.com/tags/jo-jo-dullard/) searched a area of bog in Co Offaly after a clairvoyant claimed her body was concealed there.

In 2012, gardaí investigating the murder of Bobby Ryan, a Tipperary DJ known as Mr Moonlight, sent divers to search an area in Ardmore in Co Waterford following a tip-off from a water diviner.

Mr Ryan’s body was later found in a water tank yards from where he was last seen in Tipperary.

Garda sources said it is important to examine all leads in a missing person investigation. “People may come to you with information they say they got in a vision. But who’s to say they didn’t come across it in some other way which they may not want to disclose? You have to chase everything down.”

However, they added that **they are not aware of any investigations where tip-offs from psychics have led to a breakthrough**.”

Is there any case ever, in Ireland or elsewhere, where “information” provided by a psychic has led to a resolution of the case?

Surely the psychic story just a cover story to cover some informant?

Similar to all these dog walkers that happen upon a body

WTAF. The Demon haunted World by Karl Sagan should be compulsory reading for everyone coming through our education system.

me, an ordinary citizen: I think when I ring the Guards they should be available to come to my aid promptly

      you, a psychic: no

Saw a lecture from a guy at UL about people who had been disappeared in Irish conflicts (not just Troubles). Gardai dug up a field looking for one of ‘The Disappeared’ based on a tip that was something along the lines of ‘old Joe Reilly’s horse refusing to plow one part of a field’

Edit: just to clarify, they didn’t find a body

Can these psychics not be questioned publicly so we can ridicule them for being stupid/attention seekers or if it’s found that they have mental health problems promote that.

This only encourages other con artists/people with mental health problems that they’re legitimate.

It needs to be nipped in the bud, and they need to be treated like adults who are pretending to be magic.

My ex’s ma pays a “psychic” to come around to her house every week so she can talk to her dead son. These con artists are some of the lowest of the low scum of the earth.

They need to be laughed at, they need to be ridiculed. Treating them like what they’re doing is normal does the scientific method and injustice.

I thought from the first episode that he spent his money, the holiday money and the other players money on the first night and when the wife showed up the next day he couldn’t face her or his friends and sadly ended his life. Gambling is illegal in Iceland so he could have been a massive addict how would anybody else know? If he was then the trip to Ireland meant he could gamble to his hearts content and if the wife cant find her passport (that was very odd, but very convenient if you are an addict) then he gets more time to himself to gamble. Getting drunk losing control and spending everything is not uncommon in a casino. I have seen sober men lose their wages in a bookies in less than 2 hours and when they had nothing left only then does it hit them what they have done. They always think they can win it back, even on the last bet.

The chances of leaving the Hotel and running into somebody who kills you in broad daylight and has the ability to hide your body are extremely low in my opinion.

Brilliant podcast about him such a strange story. Often wondered did he get into a taxi or a car that he believed was a taxi

Sorry this is absurd. We shouldn’t be using quackery as the basis for _anything_. Whoever signed off on these searches needs to be disciplined.

Physics are used to protect informants or have someone want to clear their conscience by using them to contact police
