Pathetically weak showing from the government. They’ll get nothing from this but more violence.

Starmer’s house getting petrol bombed was probably a major wake-up call to a lot of politicians around Europe.

Right-wing politics are surging and Politicians are probably getting very worried.

On the upside, all those “patriots” time will now be freed up so they can seek gainful employment, right?

      Right?

    6. The ‘protesters’ will be able to go back to work now. I look forward to seeing how they improve their community. /s

      Violence works

^ The lesson that the government has just taught the Irish far right.

As much as people call this weak or surrendering to the mob, I don’t see how the state can in good faith put asylum seekers into this accommodation given the level of threat. As much as it might be ‘rewarding bad behaviour’, if a property is being firebombed, you just can’t house people in there -it’s a non-starter. If you were to put 200 asylum seekers into that building tomorrow they would be in serious serious danger.

And the one at Basin Lane in dublin 8 isn’t going ahead now either, was supposed to be a dedicated women’s and children center.

      Good.

Granted the reasons will differ, but pretty sure everyone (except those making the money) will agree that housing migrants in old factories is NOT the way to go.

Looks like rural ireland will be getting more IPA centres.

    12. Ok_Cryptographer8537 on

Well I’m sure this will have no effect on other proposed centres around the country. /s

It’s not like you’ve just told people that if they just cause a riot and burn the place down they’ll get what they want.

Nice precedent, now let’s see their shocked pikachu faces when violence and intimidation at these protests becomes more common since they’ve been effectively been sent the message that that is what works.

Those “protester” pricks are still there, I live down the road. I’m still fully convinced it was never a real plan anyway, gave me the impression of pre-election tactics to show government parties are “tough on crime”. The building is lined with asbestos, there’s no way in hell any risk assesor was ever gona sign off on putting them there and that’s ignoring the additonal potential for violence.

This theory would be supported by the fact that I personally reported and took photos of some of the perpetrators directing teenagers during the riot (because it was outside my front door). The same perpetrators I reported, most notably Sean Rush, was still on the streets a month after the riot despite being caught on camera committing various crimes. He was even publically bragging that he had done the firebombing of the site.

I honestly think they left him out there to create more havoc and further discredit that movement (not to mention split the Sinn Fein vote).
