TALLINN, May 16 (Reuters) – The United States will begin discussions with European allies to reduce U.S. troops in Europe later this year, U.S. ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker said on Friday.
Asked to comment on a report that the Trump administration is considering withdrawing troops from Europe, Whitaker said “nothing has been determined”.
“But as soon as we do, we are going to have these conversations in the structure of NATO”, said Whitaker.
“It will be certainly after the summit, sometime later in the year, we are going to start those conversations… All our allies are ready to do it”, he added, referring to the NATO summit in The Hague in June.
Addressing a security conference in Estonia, Whitaker said U.S. will talk through any troop changes with allies to avoid any security gaps.
“It’s more than 30 years of U.S. desire (to reduce troops in Europe), President Trump just said, enough, this is going to happen and it’s going to happen now, this is going to be orderly, but we are not going to have any more patience for foot dragging in this situation… We just need to work through the practical consequences”, Whitaker said.
U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth told NATO allies in February that “stark strategic realities prevent the United States of America from being primarily focused on the security of Europe”.
The Atlantic reported in March that Hegseth and Vice President JD Vance had complained about European allies in a chat group. Hegseth expressed his “loathing of European free-loading”, according to the Atlantic.
Such comments have fuelled European fears about the U.S. commitment to NATO, along with Trump’s threats not to protect members that spend too little on defence, and his reluctance to keep supporting Ukraine’s fight against Russia’s invasion.
Whitaker said U.S. is not withdrawing: “The United States is going to remain in this alliance, and we are going to be a great friend an a great ally”.
He warned the European Union against restricting non-EU companies from European defence purchases, saying this would undermine NATO interoperability, slow Europe’s rearming, raise costs and stifle innovation.
I have said it once and i’ll say it again.
We need European Nuclear Weapons.
That would be excellent news. I hope they leave Germany and also special agreements for sharing European airbases get terminated.
Not only reducing, but also withdrawing every single soldier-armament and closing their bases
I wonder what the EU is doing in anticipation of this.
Poland, Germany and Italy should be allowed to have nukes. Change my mind.
Europe can do well on its own.
But what if they relocate those troops to South Korea or Japan? I doubt a withdrawal from either country would be ideal.

Mr. Whitaker doesn’t quite get it, it seems.
Local manufacture does not only means local spare parts only a short distance away, but also local jobs building equipment that suits the local environment.
*The US wants Europe to upgrade all roads and rail because their latest and shiniest tank is too big and too heavy for the existing infrastructure.*
All sounded well and good until the last sentence about the warning, about excluding non-EU participation in the money pot. Never works without injecting some kind of threat with them
The US is threatening to invade EU territory, so this can’t happen soon enough imo
The pivot to Asia has been a thing since at least Obama. Trump is more brash in how he speaks, but this has been on the US government agenda for a decade or more. Europe has had plenty of time to prepare, and chose not to.
This sub should be celebrating. This is what you all have wanted forever. Independence! It’s just that now you’re conflicted. You’re getting what you want, but it’s Trump that’s giving it to you. So do you celebrate, or act like this is terrible? LOL.
And yet the defense budget is going up
It’s was always going to happen the main question is what are assets are they going to withdraw. Certain assets are not going to be easy to replace.
Trump is doing Putin’s work.
In addition to that, more Russian gas and oil should be bought, cause not doing that damaging European economy, just saying /s
Long live EUFOR!
I presume that Trump wants to base them in the United States.
You can guess why.
about fucking time
I want a law stating every large media outlet, and it’s executives, will get a thorough financial inspection Yearly. No foreign money allowed at all.
Social media, any post that routes with a node that touches Russia, or one of its allies, gets blocked.
It will help EU countries trust one another more.
They need them here in the U.S. for arresting and murdering immigrants.
they still have to coordinate after all.
And what is happening with the soldiers/people that get pulled out?
I’m guessing that they get fired, so more people without jobs = homeless.
So US want to have massive layoffs? Because they can’t employ all those on people just to protect US areas.
Eu must keep supporting Ukraine, start quick arming itself with European equipment and spread nuclear weapons maybe to Poland, Italy, Sweden, Finland?
Good.
Those US troops need to go. If the US isn’t going to be a staunch ally, which clearly it isn’t at this point, then those US troops occupying EU military bases is potentially a serious threat. I’m sure there are many senior US military personnel who will be seething over this administration eliminating one of the cornerstones of the US’s projection of global strength.
Another Putin order he’s hurrying to follow.
Europe needs nuclear weapons and vastly increased military capacity. The US has gone as an ally and, given the very real and repeated threats from the US should be considered a potential military opponent.
I understand they will vacate the tens of military bases they have in europe that gives them world projection?
This is really bad, investigation are showing that Russia could hit Europe in the next 2 years, we need to be independant from the US, but this isnt a great Time.
And i am saying this While beeing French. We really need indépendance from the US regard if our army, but this moove from Trump really look like he doesnt care about Europe (I mean I Know he doesnt care really much, but this show that it is far worse).
This moove could have been done 10 ou 20 years ago and it woulnd had been a problem, but now with Russia rebuilding an army marger than needed for Ukraine, this isnt a good Time to go home.
In the other hand it is a wake up call for all of us, we need to have strong army and TO HAVE OUR ARMY, with european system not american.
This is a big blow for US influence. This and with trade war against the whole World will result in years and years of damage and China will be cheering Trump and co. to do more.
The imperialists are removing themselves from the continent, and you’re blackpilling?
Doesn’t make sense… The Danish government is about to award them a military base in Northern Jutland with full jurisdiction (outside Danish rule of law) for the next ten years. I know, it’s insane, but our government members have their heads up the US’s ass; it’s unbelievable. The worst thing is that US army personnel can arrest Danish citizens and prosecute them under US military law… never mind, it’s a country that’s threatening to annex a Danish territory.
So Kremlin is celebrating yet another victory, especially with how all of this is worded.
