I will never understand some peoples determination to stop other people having fun or enjoying culture.

Oh wow sure festivals are so cool and fun everyone enjoys them, but not next to me thank you very much.

There always has to be a balance here. The problem is that often with these things councils bring in some big events company who pocket most of the cash and generally do the bare minimum to tidy up after the event. Same thing happens at parks near me (outside London). I think that, if done right, events can be a good addition to life in a local area as well as a boost for local council revenues but if it is just shutting off large parts of a public space so a private business can make money and leave it shit up afterwards I am not so much of a fan. The problem is that most councils have got rid of their in house arts and culture events teams so have to resort to private contractors who just fleece them.

I commented already about the mud and lasting damage to the grass.

Regarding an earlier comment that these campaigners stop people having fun. The park is vibrant and well-used by the community all year round. It is used by several youth football clubs, fun runs, there’s a lido, a large playground, tennis courts, cafe, and basketball.
All the people who use it regularly and do those activities are pushed into a much smaller area when the walls go up for the festivals. Not to mention the flow of people in and out of the walled areas making the other side of the park inaccessible.

Who is it you want to “have fun”? Not the regulars, it seems.

      I know the park

The festival sure is too large for the park, is too intrusive, denies regular use for far too long, takes month to restore the site afterwards (if indeed it recovers properly)

Smaller events – that don’t have weeks of set up and take down afterwards – wouldn’t attract opposition. But knocking out a disproportionate amount of the park for a month so that (largely non locals) can have about 3 days of entertainment just isn’t right

Lambeth is one of the more rapacious councils for this – a couple of years ago it allowed an event without proper planning permission on Clapham Common (which took out a large area right in the middle of the school holidays when locals want to use the space most, with a closure that lasted a month for the event and left the ground horrible for about 3 months after

If my local park turned into a mudslide multiple times throughout the year I’d be upset too.

The main people that’ll be upset by this are the ones who won’t be able to rent out their homes on air bnb during the events.
