The idea that spies would abuse the asylum process isn’t exactly surprising.

Logically seeking asylum is the legally ‘easiest’ way to remain in the UK if you are up to no good.

This is simply because the burden on the asylum seeker is so limited – they can just make themselves known, with no documentation, and no requirement to prove anything, and say they are claiming asylum.

So it follows that we’d expect a significant proportion of malingers to claim asylum seeker status, whether or not that’s granted at a later date is a different question.

It would be far easier for us if spies all applied for a visa and put ‘work – other’ as the reason for their stay of course.

Of course what we don’t know is when they were approached by Iranian intelligence to spy for them. Asylum seekers with identifiable family somewhere in the world the Iranians can hurt would be low risk to try and recruit if they are already here.
