    1. Add it to the pile of evidence that Telegram has been compromised for a long while.

      >**Translation:** A Western government (guess who đŸ„–) reached out to Telegram, requesting it to silence conservative voices in Romania ahead of the presidential elections. Telegram has refused to restrict Romanians’ freedom of expression and will not block political channels. ***(Though apparently, it may still push its own propaganda. =))) )***

      >You cannot “protect democracy” by destroying it. You can’t stop “electoral interference” through interference.
You either have the right to free speech, or you don’t.
The Romanian people deserve both democracy and freedom of expression.

So this guy is kindoff salty, I guess.

      [News article](https://www.mediafax.ro/politic/durov-patronul-telegram-franta-ne-a-cerut-sa-reducem-la-tacere-vocile-conservatoare-din-romania-23553901)

      Rough translation:

      > A western european government (guess which *baguette emoji*) contacted Telegram, asking us to silence the conservative voices in Romania before today’s presidential elections. We vehemently refused. Telegram will not restrict the liberties of romanian users, nor will it block their political channels.

      > You can’t “defend democracy” by destroying democracy. You can’t “fight voting interference” by interfering in elections. You either have freedom of speech and free choices – or you don’t. And the Romanian people deserve these both.

What a fucking prick. Talking about not interfering with elections while doing the very same thing by sending this message a few hours before voting closes.

Wasn‘t that guy arrested in France for something or am I mistaken him?

    5. Let me get it straight.

He was forced by Russia to remove some group.

He complied with Russians and removed some group. (even tho I heard he reinstated them in the end)

He ran away from Russia to Safe haven in Europe.

Now he is claiming that France some European government wanted to force him into deleting messages.

If I say that he is a sleeper agent (or whatever’s the correct term in English) to sow doubt in Western (actually shoulda used Democratic) world, will anyone be offended?

Scratch that, I don’t care if anyone will get offended. As far as I’m concerned, he is a Russian asset.

Nice, a screenshot of a telegram app in German with a text in Romanian. Brainless bots from Romania reposting on reddit are just so ridiculous.

Do you people even understand what it means to post in /r/Europe and not in your local telegram group of only Romanians?..

To the topic: this is probably account spoofing, but also the guy is in jail.

But also I have no clue what the text says, maybe it’s true. Probably true. Read it, OP, those are true words in that message for sure.

Russia is always concerned with every other country democracy … except theirs. Such obvious bullshit, prick is mad because France did this

“On August 24th, French authorities detained Durov when his private plane landed in France. Since then, the French prosecutor has revealed that Durov’s detention was related to an ongoing investigation, begun in July, of an “unnamed person.” The investigation involves complicity in crimes presumably taking place on the Telegram platform, failure to cooperate with law enforcement requests for the interception of communications on the platform, and a variety of charges having to do with failure to comply with French cryptography import regulations. On August 28, Durov was charged with each of those offenses, among others not related to Telegram, and then released on the condition that he check in regularly with French authorities and not leave France. ”

Convenient that Simion went to France and shit talked Macron and France and then this happens on the day of the election. Call me conspiracy nutjob but this is fishy to say the least.

Who is wondering after COVID and telegram?

I had to install it for Yoga classes and was offered drugs from those people.

      It’s free speech lol

Not conservatives: RUSSIAN BACKED FASCISTS! They revere the WW2 era Legionary war criminals.

    10. Sweet-Blueberry8408 on

They banned Marine le Pen from running so it is not propaganda.

If there’s one thing Europe hates it is democracy.

In 2024, Russian billionaire Pavel Durov said that Telegram should remain a “neutral platform” and not “a player in geopolitics”. Well, doesn’t he seem like a solid guy who everybody can trust.

    12. PerformanceOk4962 on

What a surprise, a ruzzian billionaire pushing propaganda, this guy claims to have no ties to kremlin or Putin, but we all know that’s definitely not true

    13. BashkirTatar on

Oh yes, this is the same Pavel Durov who in November 2023 deleted the opposition Bashkir Telegram channels that were for the independence of [r/Bashkortostan](https://www.reddit.com/r/Bashkortostan/). Then in January 2024 he deleted new Bashkir opposition channels that covered the protests of January 17, 2024. Thank you very much, comrade Durov. Your medal for service to russia is already waiting for you.

    16. Dismal_Hand_4495 on

Lol, so funny when people find out telegram is a moscovian government project.

    17. absurdherowaw on

Not only Russian. This is Russian-American propaganda.

    18. Competitive-Win6002 on

Not to defend Durov, but the title is misinformation. Telegram can’t “push” anything, because it has no algorithm to recommend you content. The app just gives you the content you yourself subscribe to in the chronological order.

Otherwise, Durov is a hypocritical liar. He banned some opposition channels in Russia, blocked the “smart voting” bot, blocked the bots of paramilitary anti-government formations. He only follows his libertarian beliefs when it’s not too costly for his business.

    19. Dry_Cardiologist1603 on

Pray for Romania guys. Russian propaganda is very big on social media platforms.

    20. Possible_Golf3180 on

Oh no that sucks, anyway Telegram collects shit-tons of metadata, which is really the data that matters when it comes to tracking: the ability to deanonymise you. And no encryption for group chats on top of encryption being opt in on private chats (gotta turn on secret chat on in your “private” DMs) defeats the whole point to going on it for privacy in the first place. Even if it’s turned on, your phone number being your identifier and the functionality of automatically sniffing a user’s contacts means you’re already plotted as a node on a graph.

A Western European government (guess which one đŸ„–) contacted Telegram, asking us to silence conservative voices from Romania ahead of today’s presidential elections. We firmly refused. Telegram will not restrict the freedoms of Romanian users nor will it block their political channels.
You cannot “defend democracy” by destroying democracy. You cannot “fight electoral interference” by interfering in elections. You either have freedom of speech and fair elections — or you don’t. And the Romanian people deserve both.
