I really think cops who do this need to start actually seeing some jail time. Like, none of this IOPC garbage, none of this disciplinary reviews. Bang em in custody on remand until trial then throw them in prison.
That video is horrible. Pepper-spraying, striking with a baton & Tasering a one legged out-of-it 92 year in a wheelchair with a butter knife.
I thought there might be some mitigating factors from the description but there were none I could see.
What exactly was the risk to staff or himself?
It was a butter knife, he’s immobile, simply leave the room, respect his personal space, he’ll likely tire himself out. Continue to monitor the situation, and when things have calmed down, re-engage and de-esculate.
It was probably over something very trivial which could have been handled better.
Both staff and the police are likely complicit here.
There were various other ways they could have dealt with that situation. On what planet does this require a full can of pepper spray in the face, a baton, and then a taser? Unbelievable.

I’m usually pretty supportive of the police but this deserves some jail time. He was clearly no threat and just baffled.
The carers should have done better as well. He’s in his room away from any of service users. Just leave him to it until he puts the knife down.
Funnily enough I’ve done a lot of work in dementia care and had someone try and stab me with a butter knife. Wasn’t hard to deal with without resorting to pepper spray or tasers.

Fuck me. The response to that was *”Can I have the butter knife, sir? No? Mind if I sit over here and do the crossword then?”*
I don’t like to jump to conclusions with these things as often there is more to it. But Jesus Christ, what was he going to do? He had one leg and was basically immobile. What possible justification was there for Pava spray, a baton AND a taser. Those coppers were acting like thugs, imo.
