**Sweden’s parliament has passed a law banning the purchase of sexual performances for viewing online, including those on platforms like OnlyFans, marking a major update to the country’s sex purchase legislation.**

Under the new law, it is illegal to pay someone to perform a sexual act remotely – such as via live video – for the specific purpose of the act being viewed by the buyer. It also criminalises profiting from or promoting others who perform such acts for payment on demand.

“This is a new form of sex purchase, and it’s high time we modernise the legislation to include digital platforms,” said Social Democrat MP Teresa Carvalho, after the bill was passed by a large majority in parliament.

While viewing and paying for pre-recorded content remains legal, the law targets live, commissioned interactions, which lawmakers argue blur legal and ethical lines.

Some OnlyFans creators have criticised the law, saying it harms their livelihoods. Carvalho responded that the law is not aimed at targeting adult content creators, but at protecting young people and vulnerable individuals. She pointed to documented links between online exploitation, human trafficking, drug abuse, and grooming into more severe forms of prostitution.

The bill was proposed by the parliament’s justice committee and received cross-party backing.

With this legislation, Sweden positions itself at the forefront of regulating digital sex work, consistent with its broader zero-tolerance stance on prostitution.

In Sweden, purchasing a sexual act is punishable by up to one year in prison, while pimping carries a maximum sentence of four years in prison.

The new laws will take effect on 1 July.

I am sure prohibiting things is going to work out just fine

I wish the Swedes weren’t such weirdos with regard to sex work.

TIL that live streaming porn is less ethical than selling pre-recorded porn videos. Sweden tackling the big problems. 🤘

Easily circumvent this law by serving video with several seconds of delay. That makes it pre-recorded. Unless they’re going to define the minimum time required for the pre-recorded videos to be old before selling.

Isn’t the title clickbait? It specifically says:

      >While **viewing and paying for pre-recorded content remains legal**, the law targets live, commissioned interactions, which lawmakers argue blur legal and ethical lines.

thus its perfectly to legal to pay for OnlyFans subscription as long as you are not paying for a private video specifically made for you.

Lol at the people who are like ”I wish swedes would understand sex work and how normal and beautiful it can be. Damn puritan feminists.” Yeah, that’s how you know someone lacks any kind of deep knowledge about all the mechanics behind selling sex for a living and what it manifests.

Not sure how I feel about this honestly. I would never pay for this kind of thing personally, I cannot really fathom how the millions of hours of free porn on the internet somehow cannot be enough so you have to pay for services like that, but we are all different.

But when I was younger I was very liberal and I hated laws that limited peoples choices and freedoms but now when I’m older I find that my thinking has changed a bit and I care more for the good of society and protect people against mistakes in life, than that people can do whatever they want. But then there is the pragmatic point also, does this really help, and does it protect people?

      I just don’t know.

And now, let me remind everyone that since VPNs exist, the Swedish legislators might have a tough time enforcing that rule…

Has Sweden’s trade deficit with the UK in the services sector been particularly large in recent years?

Regarding OF content: if I’m a creator in the US and a Swedish subscribes to my channel, would this be considered a US export or a UK export?

    12. Panzerkampfwagen1988 on

I think we should let mouth breathers with no social life freely give away their money for a para social relationship.

I view it like gambling, the weak will always find a way to get exploited by someone, why stop them? Let them ruin their life if they want to and invest into helping people that happen to be in a bad place but want to get out of it.

Damn, this is a tremendous blow to a lot of strong, independent women. 🤪

How wonderful it must be for Sweden not to be facing any actual problems so that time and resources can be devoted to solving imaginary issues. Imagine if Sweden, hypothetically, was threatened by an aggressive great power right on the opposite site of the Baltic Sea, if the country was plagued by rampant gang violence, or if a dysfunctional rental market was creating a perpetual housing crisis in the larger cities – then the Swedish politicians would have to solve the actual problems which their country was facing. Fortunately, Sweden of course faces no such issues, leaving plenty of time for passing legislation solely for the sake of moral grandstanding…

Sweden and the Nordics as a whole have a system where Prostitution is Not Criminalized but buying the service is. Once I saw the headlines I understood it’s pretty much the same except online.

How will it work when servers, websites and bank statements all say where you just spent your money on? I have no idea.

A lot of young women has used OF or simular to sell stuff online, they often later regret it.

I think education is the way to go as im not a fan of banning stuff

    17. AdorableMark6700 on

Considering Sweden utilises the Nordic model for sex work, I don’t find this particularly surprising. If anything, the “criminalises profiting from or promoting others who perform such acts for payment on demand” part sounds like they’re trying to crack down on the online pimps (like Andrew Tate..) that have started exploiting these platforms.

    18. What if the Onlyfans content is showing behind the scenes of a movie director or stuff?

The title can be dangerously misleading 👆

    19. viotix90 on

So it’s for payment for people to do specific things?

I assume it’s also applicable for cam sites where that’s the whole concept?

    20. SwgnificntBrocialist on

All the Nordics already had the law on the books, they just finally enforced it, as they should. Prostitution is a vile and corrosive force in mankind and punters deserve nothing but scorn.

    21. Should be banned everywhere but impossible because there are 40 other such sites already everywhere

    22. WknessTease on

Nice. I suppose this is meant to “protect women”, am I right? Swedish onlyfans creators must be _thrilled_ right now at being protected so efficiently.
