This is just the tip of the iceberg, thousands like him have gotten away with it, at least for now, or until hmrc eventually catches up. As for punishment, prison is unlikely and most will simply end up repaying at like a quid a week.

People forget how easy it was to secure a Bounce Back Loan.

I was in my first year of trading when lockdown hit, so I didn’t have a full year of trading figures. It’s quite a seasonal business, so it would be optimistic to say I had *anything* to base my turnover figures on.

It was completely legitimate – explicitly allowed – that if you were in your first year of trading then you could just estimate what you thought your turnover would be, and take out a loan on that basis – up to 25% of your turnover on a 2.5% interest rate. No one ever asked for proof of my turnover – and as it turned out my estimate was a bit optimistic.

I’m still paying it back now.

Everyone upset about £47k in COVID loans to a small business whilst Michelle Mone is STILL sitting on £232m given to her in return for PPE she didn’t provide.
