>Turkey must lift a 30-year old war threat against Greece if it wants Athens to consent to Ankara accessing European Union defense funds, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said on Thursday.
>Greece and Turkey, NATO allies but historic foes, have been at odds for decades over a range of issues from airspace to the extent of their maritime boundaries and ethnically-split Cyprus.
>In 1995, the Turkish parliament declared a “casus belli,” or cause for war, if Greece unilaterally expanded its territorial waters beyond six nautical miles in the Aegean Sea.
>“If Turkey wishes access into European defense financing tools, the legitimate concerns of both Greece and Cyprus should be taken into account,” Mitsotakis said, referring to projects such as the EU’s new flagship arms-buying fund, Security Action for Europe (SAFE).
>“It has been 30 years since the Turkish National Assembly voted on the infamous casus belli. I think that 30 years later, the time has come to directly ask our Turkish friends to take it off the table,” he told Skai radio.
>Mitsotakis said he would convey the message to Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan soon, citing improved bilateral ties.
>The Turkish government was not immediately available for comment.
>Asked about Greece trying to keep Turkey away from EU defense projects, a Turkish Defense Ministry source said earlier that any attempts to disregard Turkey’s importance for European security were bound to fail.
>“Carrying bilateral disputes to multilateral platforms and putting forth an approach aimed at excluding our country is both a step that is not taken with good intentions, and not a smart one,” the source said.
>Ankara and Athens have been exploring whether they can start talks aimed at demarcating their maritime zones. Mitsotakis said that a high-level meeting between the two countries will take place in the coming months. [Reuters]
Makes sense to me
This is some real issues of concern, instead of haggling over fkn fishing rights
Turkey must also:
• Put an end to its illegal occupations of EU member state Cyprus, but also Syria and Iraq.
• Stop perpetrating, supporting, and funding war crimes and ethnic cleansing in the Caucusus, namely via their genocidal proxy, Azerbaijan.
• Legislate for equal rights for all minorities within Turkey.
• Recognise, and apologise, for the Armenian Genocide.
I have been visiting museums across Europe for several weeks now. A key theme has been the war between the Persians and the west/Christendom – all of Europe has been a battlefield for god damn thousands of years now. And these fucking idiots are still at it?
I actually support Turkey lifting the casus belli, as I don’t believe Greece and Turkey will ever go to war again (hopefully). It’s no longer necessary, especially since both countries are NATO allies. However, Greece should not use this as an opportunity to unilaterally expand its EEZ in the Aegean.
So the EU doesn’t let Turkey to the Union but they’ll let them join the defence funds while occupying European land and claiming like half of the Greek EEZ. Oh the irony.
Europe funds and ever day we talk about adding new not EU country?! what is point in EU fund if good part will go out of EU?
They should demand that Erdogan resign and respect the results of a free and fair election while they’re at it.
The borders are the same
The sea is still there
The claims are still exist
So what difference does 30 years make? Will Greece guarantee that they will never unilaterally expand its territorial waters beyond six nautical miles in the Aegean Sea?
Turkry shouldn’t get access to these funds no matter what, they are not an EU country and barely even a European country. Fuck them.
It’s like a child’s view of politics. “*If our government declares that we have an excuse to start another war, then we can attack Greece whenever we want in the next 50 years without actually needing a reason, it’ll be fine, the international community will stand back because our government said we have an excuse*”.
How about none of that happens and Germany does what Germany will do anyway?
[It is not like EU countries are ](https://www.aa.com.tr/en/europe/turkish-defense-industry-makes-technology-transfer-to-germany/3475289)not already [buying equipment from turkish companies.](https://www.iiss.org/online-analysis/military-balance/2025/01/turkiyes-defence-industry-charts-a-course-for-european-growth/)
ahahahaha 🤣🤣🤣 Have you guys heard anything more ludicrous lately 🤣 So, Türkiye will lift the declaration so that greece can make whole Aegean Sea a greek lake and block Türkiye’s accession to the Mediterranean.
Somebody needs to wake these drank guys up immediately. We are talking about a whiney needy pathetic little country that has nothing to offer and the only reason it is in EU is they are Christian, nothing else…
Türkiye doesn’t need to convince greece for anything. Türkiye should discuss any issue with Germany, France and the US from now on; they will give their orders, and greece will do it like a good boy.
Why are we giving money to Turkey? And why for military equipment? Who the fuck is in charge in the EU?
Turkey is the great antiWest & antiChristian state. It has no place in NATO or the EU. It only stays in NATO for prestige & access to western weapons. Turkey is politically more aligned with Iran & Hamas as Turkey is rabidly pro political Islam in its foreign policy. Within hours of the India Pakistan conflict, Turkey gave its unequivocal full support to Pakistan & sent shipment of weapons to Pakistan. Why? Because Pakistan is also Islamic. Yet Turkey sent nothing to Ukraine & takes part in no sanctions against Russia, unlike Greece. Turkey is the black sheep of NATO & should receive no EU funds to further enhance it’s military.
I don’t see any good reason to allow turkey access to EU defence funds. Seriously
Doesn’t Greece have a similar declaration still active today, but for Albania ?
The hypocrisy on the EU on display for the world to see…
Giving access to Rusi, eeem meant Turkey, while occupying half of an EU country and claiming the EEZ of another
Apparently we never learned our lesson of relying on Russian gas.
I am sure this will end well.
Greece wants Turkey to lift a casus belli that only happened because Greece landed troops on a disputed island near the Turkish border, blockaded it with its navy and raised its flags.
Fat chance.
China or Russia does the same kind of shit and they are a hostile nation, Greece does the same and it’s “Greece did nothing wrong, Turkey is evil and they aren’t even in Europe, poor Greece is just being threatened by big bad wolf all the time.”
Cry me a river.
> Greece says Turkey must lift the 1995 parliament declaration of a “casus belli” war threat to get access to EU defense funds
What about just not being an asshole?
Just rectifying such a situation could give Turkey access to the fund? C’mon.
Fortunately, it’s not that simple and not up to Greece alone.
If you want that EU money maybe don’t go full Ottoman on Greece
Another day another ekatherimini.com post on r/Europe to generate hate towards Turks.
Greece demanding something again,(even after demanding name change for Macedonia)but Hungary is the bad guy.
EU needs Turkish military security, not vice versa.
This is why EU is never going to be anything more then a target for real geopolitical players.
