There won’t be any change in russia position if they still think they’re winning.
Trump simply does not want to shoulder the cost for helping Ukraine. He’s got other problems to work on (you know, a trade war with the rest of the world). This might be simply a tactic to add additional pressure on top of the tariffs.

The only reason for peace talks with Russia was just for Trump to realize that Russia has apparently very long days and that US cooperation with those who actually want to cooperate is more beneficial for the US than trying to side with seasoned dictators.
