      **TL;DR:**

      • Russia has begun moving its shadow fleet of oil tankers through the Gulf of Finland under the escort of warships and fighter jets. This is the first time since the start of the war in Ukraine that Moscow has openly demonstrated a military readiness to protect energy shipments circumventing sanctions.

      • “This marks a completely new level and a very serious development,” Finnish Defense Minister Antti Häkkänen said on Saturday on Yle’s program Ykkösaamu. The Estonian Navy attempted to stop a Russian tanker violating sanctions regulations, but the vessel ignored the orders.

      • Shortly after that, a Russian Su-35S fighter jet was spotted in the area, which may have been a response to Estonia’s actions. Later in the week, two Russian military aircraft also violated Finnish airspace near Porvoo.

      • According to him, while Russian military presence in the Baltic Sea is not new, such systematic armed escorts for oil tanker are unprecedented. The incident occurred on May 24 in which a Russian ship violated sanctions regulations.

      Technically speaking, it’s good news.

The cost of running fighter jets and warships all over the Baltic is insane , even for Russia, especially with oil prices right now.

And all it cost us was a few Coast Guard interventions.

For Russia, the cost of this war is insane. Meanwhile, the Russian population’s wealth is at the same level as in an African country. And Russian demographics was a massive problem even before the war.

So yes, a prosperous Ukraine would be unbearable for the Kremlin fascists.

      edit: median wealth in Russia = 8600 $ ; Russia’s world ranking = 81 !

      Equatorial Guinea = 7500 $

      Tunisia = 7300 $

It’s in the same ballpark but I’ll admit that the average Tunisian is slightly poorer than the average Russian, indeed. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_wealth_per_adult

Makes it easier to identify them, and they generally can’t avoid going through territorial waters anyway. If the warships/warplanes escort through TW, it would be an act of war, and an international incident that can – if repeated – lead to warning shots and forced expulsion.

Escort them where ? Stop accepting these ships into our ports.

    6. GiantSquirrelPanic on

Expensive. Diverts assets. This is costly for their war effort.

    7. torryton3526 on

What are they going to do once the ships are
      Out of the Baltic ?

    8. Alabrandt on

Can’t they just stop them in the straits around Denmark? I doubt they’ll try any funny business that far from a home port and surrounded by NATO countries.

    9. Estrucean on

Pretty handy that they identify em, that way countries further down the line can detain them.

    10. Hopeful_Style_5772 on

So sanctions working?! What europe will do about it?

    11. Delicious-Jicama-529 on

Good, more of their finite and dwindling resources being diverted from the war.

Wait until they start threatening environmental disasters, “such nice coastline, it would be a shame if you had an oil spill”

    13. Aethericseraphim on

Shoot the jets down the moment they violate your airspace. Turkey did it once before and Putin very quickly stopped flying jets over Turkish airspace. Bullies are cowards. Always have been, always will be.

Shadow fleet with warship escort? It’s not a “shadow fleet”, it is called “We will do whatever we want because others will swallow it”

    15. TheflyingAntz on

Coast guards start to use Javelins and mobile antiaircraft launchers?

    16. Yeohan99 on

Let them wear out their jets. Every hour spend on futile escorts is an hour less above Ukraine.

    17. backstubb on

so they volunturally starts to identify vessels of own shadow fleet?

    18. s8018572 on

So their lifeline is really those shadow tanker huh

They should suffer something like ww2 ABCD encirclement against Imperial Japan

    19. Prykhodko on

Russia will stop fighting when it runs out of money for the war. It’s that simple.

    20. CreepyFlan627 on

So, what your telling me, is we’ll see some malfunctioning planes turn into submarines? 😃

    21. Sir_Henry_Deadman on

So the fleet is constantly monitored and easily tracked as Russian ships are with them

Then how do they enter none NATO territorial waters because they won’t let the Russian warships in will they

    22. aspaceadventure on

So, that means they are official russian merchant ships know, doesn’t it?
