This is basically nightmare fuel and won’t stop anyone technologically inclined from doing anything they like communicating wise

      **TL;DR:**

      • Experts are again warning against the EU’s plans to weaken encryption. 89 signatories published a joint letter to urge the European Commission to “reframe its approach” Unveiled last April, ProtectEU aims to find a legal way to create a backdoor into encrypted communications.

      • The technology is the backbone of how services like Signal, WhatsApp, and Proton Mail work, but law enforcement has long argued that this technology is an obstacle to criminal investigations. The European Commission itself previously acknowledged encryption as needed to protect the integrity of cyberspace, too.

      • They wrote: “We are deeply concerned by the Commission’s continued focus on identifying ways to weaken or circumvent encryption. This undermines its own security objectives under the ProtectEU strategy” They then urge reframe the Technology Roadmap, taking into consideration also the industry concerns, not only those of law enforcement.

      • Also urged lawmakers to make them an active part of the process of the EU Commission’s plan to bolster the security of the European bloc.

    3. Its kinda laughable how EU officials point in aprehension at how bad China/Russia are with their stuff, but turn around and try to introduce extremely overreaching surveillance laws that put those places to shame in a way. Esp this latest bill that they are currently accepting feedback for, that was proposed by a group of annonymous high up people and the EC doesnt wish to reveal their names.

    4. Imagine all the MEPs’, government ministers & officials private Whatsapp, Signal chats available to read to anyone with the access & money.

That’s a world these plans make not only possible but likely.

Who would want that? Not a friend of the EU I reckon.

Not only that, they are also seeking to weaken human rights council under guise that we must reframe asylum seekers, but at the same time they also want to do away with privacy law.

Criminals will start using strong encryption whilst the regular Joe will get his personal data harvested for god knows what reason

You could give a 4th year computer science grad a month and they’ll throw together an encrpyted messaging app.. These apps that they want backdoor access to aren’t some magical feats of amazing encryption and coding.

This is what happens when tech policy is shaped by politicians and policy makers who don’t understand the technology, yet are utterly convinced of their own expertise. They’re usually people who think encryption is inherently dangerous, and think the internet functions like a 1970s phone system or a filing cabinet with wires.

Chatcontrol is also still being pushed, likely to get worse once it’s Denmark’s turn on the presidency.
