How many of these women have kids, the unfortunate consequence of having a parent with an addiction

We’re all told when we’re young about how bad drugs are.

I was at a bar two years ago and a woman came up to me while I was ordering a pint and asked if I had any coke. I was like what? I can order you one if you like. I thought she needed something to sober up as she seems well on. lol I’m dense sometimes. She wandered off with a weird look on her face.
I was late 40s at the time and she was in her twenties. It was only after I was sitting down for a while chatting something when “ping” in my brain and I went ohhhhhhh.

To be honest, this is just a symptom of a deeper problem, one, one, there are very little to know supports for adults with mental health issues/neurodivergency, which self medicating is a common thing amongst people with each groups, while our culture around mental health has improved greatly, we still have this “be grand attitude” instead of demanding better services from our government.
Not to mention the added pressures of the cost of living and the added stress, I understand why somebody would try to self medicate even if it is a fucking God awful drug.

While men will rather part with their firstborn than be off the bag!
People well the people I’ve seen over the years do some pretty messed up stuff to get coke, sex is sometimes a payment.
Tis sad tbh, as I’ve tried coke a few times and it’s rather shite.
Speed seems pretty popular still with the older crowd mind.

I must be the only person in Ireland who has never tried illegal substances.
I was always happy with my pints and the odd whiskey.

This was at about 215% year on year at the last study.
I checked because I’m in recovery circles (alcohol), and felt the storm was coming with Cocaine.
This is honestly a fucking terrifying stat. When I see the devastation that’s been wrought on individuals and families at the hands of this stuff – it’s no fucking joke.
I see a lot of content online that normalises and downplays a ‘few bumps’ or a ‘bag’ and it breaks my heart. People are going to do what they do, but I think people are sleepwalking in their droves into addiction.
With alcohol/alcoholism it seems (to me, it’s my view) that it affects a smaller percentage of any drinking population, is affected by familial and societal factors – but is quite distinct. It’s a vast difference between someone who likes to drink (or drink heavily) and an alcoholic. The heavy drinker can get on with their lives or put the plug in the jug at their discretion. An alcoholic will follow it to the depths. Many alcoholics will feel they’re born with the proclivities.
With cocaine, again it’s my own view (not stating fact) it creates addicts. It’s an extremely powerful and alluring drug if it gets you on the hook.
426% increase is fucking mind blowing, but certainly doesn’t seem excessive. Really saddened to see this, but I hope there’s some strong social initiatives taken up as a result.
Edit: just caught it’s since 2017 – still shocking figures nonetheless

I worked in city centre bars for the guts of 2 decades. All through the celtic tiger, the boom, the bust etc up until covid. I was genuinely horrified in the later years at how prevalent coke was, especially with younger people and how openly it was talked about. Only a few years ago it was all hush hush and secret, everybody and their mam is on the shit now.
People cant even go for a couple pints on a wednesday night to watch the soccer without a bag now. Its an epidemic.

Coke costs a fair bit of money.
