We don’t? Politicians vote in accordance of whoever paid them the most, it’s not an accurate portrayal of what the rest of the country thinks.

It’s not support, it is “we can’t afford to do otherwise”

There’s this thing in Cyprus where people don’t vote a politician because of his beliefs, values and morals but rather because of what they represent:
That may be a party, a relative, a location,a movement (like with Phidias where he represented giving up on the current political environment so people voted for him even if he is a complete buffoon) and many more unreasonable things.

Outside of the political reasons, we “support” Israel, because we need them for the medical resources they have. Many patients travel to Israel hospitals for extreme difficult cases. Like it or not, their medical resources, doctors and facilities are one of the best in our region.

Because Israel is a stable and rich ally that we depend on for intelligence and a level of military support we cannot achieve otherwise. (Israel has provided far greater military expertise and technology to us than Greece and the EU in the past 5 years). It’s a mutually beneficial relationship and Israel through Cyprus can keep an eye on Turkish expansionism.

The amount of blind hate towards Israel is really amazing in this sub, the unending posts criticising Israel for every move is just tiring at this point.
Please don’t use any Israeli services in the future, and if you/your loved ones get to a point they need medical attention that can only be solved in Israel, don’t go there to solve it.
We have too many terrorists getting free treatment in Israel anyways.
But you choose to ignore the good stuff and focus only on the bad, war is ugly, it’s not fair, but this war would have been over a long time ago if they would have released the hostages as they were requested may times during the last year and a half.
Oh and please don’t use sweet tap water in larnaka Limassol area since Israel is the one that built here the desalination plants.
Also you can give back the air anti rockets defence systems Israel delivered if you don’t like it, (Israel had to pioneer and invent this defence system since rockets are being shot at it non stop for the last 30 years from Gaza)
But fuck it, Israel is always bad, occupying force that should stop existing right?(right?)

Basically because of the gas pipelines and cooperation (there is a dispute about the Aphrodite field which lies across the borders of the Cyprus/Israel EEZ). Also because of the electricity interconnector between Cyprus/Israel/Greece.

Cyrpus is usually on both sides but the current government is more Israeli friendly.
Why is that tho? That will be answered in the future.
If there is a clue in recent history (golden pasports), probably there are business happening backstage.

Our President has shown alignment with Israel in recent times, and realistically, that makes strategic sense. Why shouldn’t we strengthen ties with a powerful country well-connected to the West, and one that has shown genuine interest in cooperating with us on many levels?
Our closest neighbor remains our greatest threat. Greece is and always has been our strongest ally, but geographically, it’s not right next door. Israel is nearby and capable (and willing) of offering support on multiple regional levels.
The suffering of Palestinians is tragic and deserves recognition. And I am against their suffering. But so was the suffering of Greek Cypriots in 1974, a tragedy largely ignored by the international community. Turkey, the state responsible, continues to avoid consequences, receives EU funding, and is even considered for inclusion in European defense initiatives. And all this is happening while they *continue* to occupy the territory of an EU member state! This double standard is painful to witness.
Others freely engage diplomatically with Turkey (our occupier) whilst we are criticised for pursuing our own strategic interests. Building a stable relationship with Israel doesn’t mean endorsing all of its actions, it means recognising Cyprus’s limited alliances and the need for regional stability.
I don’t support any form of genocide – not against Palestinians or anyone else. But, I do support Cyprus building partnerships that serve its national interests, **like everyone else does.** It’s time we stop being the only ones expected to show humanity when so few stand with us. Who has shown humanity for the Greek Cypriot victims, compassion for our relatives who died at the hands of the invaders, and who cared for the 200,000 refugees and our peoples’ / parents’ lost properties?
I recently saw a video of a group of Cypriots (I think leftists, but not sure) taking to the streets to protest in support of the Palestinian cause. That made me wonder why didn’t the same happen for the Greek Cypriot cause? And I am not even talking about the Turkish invasion. Why didn’t anyone come out in protest against Turkey’s inclusion in the European defense system, despite its role as an occupier and aggressor? Why do we have to be the compassionate ones for everyone else, but when it comes to our own struggles, nobody seems to care?
I understand others may have different views and I don’t expect anyone to agree with me. This is simply my personal opinion.
