In a recent statement, the French government suggested it may move to prohibit hotels and vacation rentals from implementing “adults-only” or “no children allowed” policies. This comes after an increase in “child-free” accommodations marketed as peaceful getaways for couples or solo travelers seeking quiet environments.

The reasoning? The Ministry of Tourism and the Ministry for Children believe such policies may constitute discrimination, arguing that families with children should not be excluded from public hospitality services. While there is no concrete law yet, officials are exploring legal avenues to enforce inclusivity across the tourism industry.

Some legal experts point out that under EU law, age-based discrimination typically refers to employment, and that the hospitality sector may have more flexibility—especially when it comes to adults-only spaces like spas, retreats, or even certain cruises.

Curious to hear what people across Europe think. Would your country support or reject such a measure?

Honestly, the parents should either do their job in shutting their kids up (to a reasonable degree). If they don’t the hotel should be allowed to more easily kick them out (again with reasonableness).

Hmm I’m against everyday places like cafes etc. banning kids, but I don’t have an issue with specific hotels targeting an “adults only” crowd. There’s still going to be plenty of family-friendly hotels, and wanting to avoid loads of children if travelling without them is fair in my opinion.

Kids are annoying if they aren’t your own. I’m in favour of child free flights as well.

    5. vrajealamarii on

Why is this different from a night club. To accept children some need to propose kids activities, security. I think they are going to far.

    6. Do the children pay for their bed? People nowadays let their children doing whatever the fuck they want and it usually means annoying everybody and being louder than a WWII air siren.

    7. cougarlt on

That would for sure be discriminatory against people who don’t want to have screeching and running children all around them. Where would such people go to rest? I guess I’ll spend my euros elsewhere.

I own a BnB in the South of France next to Mediterranean sea, let me tell you, I think I won’t even reopen next year if such a shitty law passes.

Kids can be EXTREMELY annoying and it adds naturally a lot of risks of injury/damages and drama to the house, I can’t believe they’re even thinking to that, it’s disgusting, I would be so much pissed, people and myself deserve the right to enjoy our holidays without the constant bullshit of dumb kids and lazy parents shrugging while saying “well my kid is certified HPI, deal with that”.

F this crap. And yeah, I know some kids are quiet and educated but I don’t care, a lot of them are unbearable and agressive, it shouldn’t be my problem and my other traveller’s problem, it’s already insufferable in trains, planes and other stuff like that, enough BS, mind your own ruined budget and spending dear government, then we can talk.

I feel discriminated against having this child propaganda pushed onto me

    10. That’s ridiculous, if we go this route, banning children from stripclubs is discriminatory too, should we lift that ban ? What about alcohol ?
Tons of spa are women-only, is that discriminatory too ? That’s not the question, the question is : does this discrimination matters ? It.Does.Not.

    11. retr0grade77 on

That’s silly. Some of the biggest fans of adult-only hotels are mums or parents who have child care covered for a holiday.

    12. Jackibearrrrrr on

I feel like having places where kids can’t go is fine. If you remove the ability for people to go someone child free in France, they will just take their money elsewhere

    13. djingo_dango on

France usually bans stuff. Now they’re banning the banning of stuff? This is getting too meta

    14. WaldWaechterin on

And I feel discriminated by loud and annoying toddlers/children. 🙄 This “ban” is bullshit.

    15. Okay but then do not count on people around them behaving in a child friendly manner…

Seriously what is the idea. Leave people some room…

    16. Cosmicferal on

Isn’t it discriminatory for those who wish “adults only” hotels? Better have both options so everyone is happy… It’s not like children are banned everywhere, that would be discriminatory.

    17. Aware-Computer4550 on

You want kids to keep your society going and alive but the same society doesn’t want to put up with kids. I wish I could say I didn’t understand this delina but I actually do

    18. LittleFairyOfDeath on

Its not just about hotels but also vacation rentals. The former is totally cool and i encourage its existence. But banning families from vacation rentals is not okay imo.

This coming from the government that is banning speech and religion lmaooooo, they’re just worried about those €€€€€€€€€€€€€€€ can’t have those huge tourism euros from families going away

    20. FR_42020 on

If kids are banned at some places it should be fine to ban other age groups as well. I would love to have an option to go to a hotel, supermarket or gym where no one over the age of 60 is allowed.

    21. WhyOhWhy60 on

How can these politicians misunderstand the intent of ‘adult only ‘ hotels to this degree.

    22. konnanussija on

Moronic idea. There aren’t enough child free spaces, but instead of having places for children to keep them away from people trying to enjoy their time, they want to bring these shitlings into even more spaces.

    23. Tardislass on

I went to a small hostel/pension in Spain that had no child policy. It was wonderful and really the layout would not be suited for children anyway.

It’s a private business, hotels can ban pets, they should be able to ban children as well.

    24. Imaginary_Pin1877 on

As a parent, I see no problem with some hotels being adults-only. It’s their business and their property. And they are not monopolies. The market should be free from such regulations. Customers vote with their money.

    25. Vegetable_Fox9134 on

Sound’s like increased sales for Hotels that allows kids
