Not even a year has passed since Romania’s constituțional court has cancelled an entire election, now, they strike again with a law that cannot be overturned:
Classifying as secret public official’s asset declarations.
That’s not all, even when a politician will be asked for an asset declaration he is no longer obligated to include his family in the declaration, opening a large loophole where money obtained by fraudulent ways can just be transferred to his family and no one will know.
The press will also no longer have access to these declarations, sending Romania’s anti corruption fight back 20 years.
What would this mean for Romania?
Likely a sharp decrease in international trust, less outside investments and an even harder economic struggle.
While Romanians showed time and time again they want to go the EU path, the constitutional court has other plans.

The Romanian Constitutional Court’s decision to make politicians’ wealth statements no longer public aligns with ongoing concerns about transparency and corruption in Romania, which have historically hindered democratic accountability. This ruling may further erode public trust, as asset declarations have been a key tool in combating political corruption, although their effectiveness has been debated.
On a side note, Nicusor said he would publish his on the presidential website and I think any serious politician should do the same. And we, the people, should tax those who don’t.

This is a stupid title. It’s not just for the politicians it’s for everyone in the government that has to give those statements. Including cops, doctors, army etc etc.
Until now anyone could search your name and could see how much you make, what you own, what is your debt etc etc.
And while good for politicians anyone can also search the cop that gave them a ticket or arrested them etc etc.
All the court said is the current law breaks privacy laws. So the parliament has to modify the law now to make it comply with the decision.
Make no mistake the decision is definitely made to help corruption, in the same day they also said the those statements don’t have to include spouse and children so they can hide their fortunes there.
If they make said changes or not that remains to be seen 😉
But they do have the decent privacy reason to hide these changes behind.
