    1. > The other big question hanging over the whole affair at the moment is whether Sinn Féin are in or out.

      > There is also the issue that, for many in the Labour Party, Sinn Féin do not have proper “left-wing” credentials.

      > It is understood that a number of people approached by Labour about running took issue with the idea of being backed by Sinn Féin.

Quite funny that the mudguard for brutal austerity, bailing out the banks, water charges etc. is lashing out at rivals as “not being left wing”.

A united Left? They’d split before you could say “Communist Manifesto.”

    3. >Rumours have even been flying that Liveline’s Joe Duffy is being courted by the Labour Party.

What the fuck is wrong with the Labour Party?

“The first item on the agenda is, as usual, the split”

Everyone will rue the precedent Higgins has set with his outspokenness on political issues and coziness after the deaths of ‘left wing’ despots  next time it could well be someone with different viewpoints that isn’t a media darling..

Oh god, usually they’re so good for uniting at elections.

At this stage you gotta wonder if it’s gonna be tumbleweeds all the way to (say) September, at which point we’ll see a last minute flurry from some Party Approved candidates. Nobody appears interested, or willing, to even speak tepid enthusiasm for the role.

Noteworthy how the the noise has died down over the only vocal person who said they’d run; perhaps someone had a quiet word about his chances of the nomination.

There are so many individuals and grievances between them in the left wing in Irish politics but they will never be able to unite unless a very popular right wing candidate enemies. Even then it is not guaranteed.

However Catherine Connolly as a left wing figure to rally around might be problematic, the last tv piece I saw her on a few months ago, she came across as painfully naive, unprepared and deluded for even a basic discussion about a conflict that has been going for years. It got roasted on here, the Ukraine-Russia conflict.

Quelle surprise! Catherine “barrel bomber” Connolly, Joe “talk to Joe” Duffy, Mike “we don’t know any of his views really” Ryan and Frances “I admire Claire Daly” Black. I have never voted FF in top 10 in my life and my dog had a go at Bertie when he knocked on my door (and I called him out to his face long before 2007 of overheating the economy), but I’d still vote for Bertie ahead of that lot.

We also need to talk about the “Irish Left’s” relationship with mass murderers and the uncomfortable dichotomy of killing Palestinians being bad but killing Ukrainians is understandable. Connolly and Black have serious questions to answer.

What an absolutely shambolic opposition. Perhaps the folk who want change should protest against this.
