Is that because the BBC called out defamation in Ireland?
LOL – no.
Reform of defamation was already on the table. The previous justice committee did Pre-legislative scrutiny on a heads of bill already prepared. There is promises in the program for government about it.
To say it was as a result of Gerry winning is nonsense.
Didn’t Adams sue the BBC in the UK?
Things didn’t go the way I wanted it to so I’m changing the rules….. Seems very fair alright.
We’ll end up with our own version of Fox News so
Or maybe media could just stop defaming people?
Defamation reform has been promised for so long. I think it might even have been in the last programme for Government.
I didn’t follow the trial but surely it’s straight forward. The BBC can’t just say ‘a source told us X’ without having some other evidence to corroborate it.
For example, if s source told a journalist that The Monk killed a specific person would it acceptable to repeat it? It’s not good enough to say it seems like the kind of thing that’s plausible for that person given what we know about them.
Maybe I’m missing something here because media people seem to view it as a bad result but I haven’t heard a good explanation. Mostly they either sound anti SF or just pro MSM
Maybe a legislation change is required to streamline the process. But at the end of the day, a broadcaster cant just make shit up.
But at the end of the day Fianna Fail are completely spineless and will gargle up some British balls before defending the Irish people.
>which allows publishers to argue publication was fair and reasonable and in the public interest
yeah no , BBC spread specific lies all this will do is alow media to speak misleading information
“The Law benefitted someone we don’t like politically so we better change it”
The removal of juries is already the big win the media wanted.
Curious how they’d reform the fair opinion and reasonable publication stuff. Why wasn’t it already in the Bill?
If journalists can’t get their point across without defaming someone, then they’re a pretty shit journalist, and deserve to be brought to court.
Stop defaming people, or use your command of the written or spoken word to make your point in another way, it’s that simple.
Seems to be beyond the thinking of the client journalists at the Indo.
They better beware of cutting a stick for their own backs.
