    1. Considering Brussels is 1 bln in debt with no sight of a new coalition, this could be a good thing.

Tho I don’t know how Brussels gave Athens such a big loan.

Important part: “has returned”. Who is to blame, a disorganized profligate ‘lender’, or the recipient? I vote for the EU or ‘Belgium’, take your pick.

To just quickly clear the bullshit seen in some of the comments. This is by no means a debt payment by Greece to the EU, but it is a fine or a forced payment, after our corrupt politicians managed to embezzle funds from agricultural subsidies over the past 15 years. It is one of the scandals perpetrated by our incompetent and downright criminal current government and has been getting a lot of airtime on the media here in Greece. So to sum up, not a good thing.

All these money were given to Cretan farmers. Crete never voted New Democracy party, the political party of now prime minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. Historically, in Crete “New Democracy” party had the lowest percentages in whole Greece. However at the recent elections Crete voted New Democracy. Omg what a miracle!!

It is not only an economical scandal. It is a scandal for democracy!!! EU must act decisively!!! Otherwise EU legitimises Russia, Qatar, USA etc to intervene at democratic procedures of EU states. If Mitsotakis is allowed to do it, why not Putin?

So the government is supposed to pay back or the beneficiaries?

This could turn out to be the biggest f…. ..o for greece since the taxpayers who didn’t pocket the money will have to pay for the wrongful beneficiaries.
