The city of Toulouse has confirmed it will once again increase drinking water prices by 42% this summer as part of plans to combat drought.

Authorities have confirmed that the higher rate will begin from June 1, and last until at least October. After that, rates will drop by 30%. The plan aims to reduce water usage city-wide, to prevent (or at least, to prevent worsening) drought conditions.

The scheme was first introduced in 2024 and was considered a success by local officials

“The results were positive,” said Robert Médina, vice-president in charge of water and hygiene at the Toulouse Métropole, to TF1. “From June 1 to October 31, we consumed half a million cubic metres less [of water].”

The higher rate will affect all residents whose water comes from the Eau de Toulouse Métropole, which covers 37 communes in the metropolitan area, and around 850,000 residents..

In real terms the rate will rise to €4.40 per cubic metre (m3) for the period, up from the €2.58 per m3 that residents have been paying since November 1, 2024.

Note the €2.58 per m3 was itself a 30% reduction on standard prices, so the €4.40 m3 represents a 42% increase on standard prices.

It seems dumb, but it makes sense, the only way to make people stop wasting water is making them pay it more, too bad it’s not that effective towards the rich, who in these situations are probably the less affected by the price increase

And how much will industry and agriculture pay?

I’m really not against some price increases, especially if it helps to reduce consumption and finance a more efficient network but everybody has to pay a fair share.

As a policy intervention, I would instead cap each household to a certain amount of normal charge and then the price hike afterwards to attain the stated goal of overall consumption while limiting the impact on those of the lowest income level.

It’s an increase on city water/drinking water prices. You can waste untreated water all you want.

How does this going to help? People need to drink water, wash themselves and do the laundry. It’s like a basic thing to exist.

And what’s the long solution? In case droughts occur every year?

    8. Azatoth_42 on

Or maybe, raise the price only after a certain amount of water. Rationalize water usage by investing in better infrastructure to clean used water and prevent leaks…

We’re obviously struggling with water retention for completely different reasons (privatisation meaning any profit is given to shareholders instead of investing in infrastructure); but water is such a frustrating topic to talk about because everybody is just so thick about it.

If a government announced millions being spent on reservoirs, the dumb electorate simply thinks _huh, how stupid; the planet is covered by 99% water isn’t it?_ and that’s that. Dead in the water policy that looks like a stupid monetary decision when people are starving and hospitals are falling apart.

71% of the planet is covered in water.

2.5% of all the water is fresh water (usable).

31.3% is retrievable, the rest is locked up in permafrost and glaciers.

So we can only really distribute 0.7825% of all the water on this planet — because desalination isn’t efficient enough yet (first person to solve this will be a trillionaire).

Of that, about 90% is given to industry and agriculture, the remaining 10% is what us lot drink and shower in.

0.07825% of water on the planet for 8,000,000,000 people. This is why we need to invest in water retention.

First thing all cities with these issues should do is to ban the washing of cars by any means necessary during the summer.

How about we actually put a price on it to be refined? Big cooperations have an unlimited money glitch, they pay nothing….

So there’s gonna be another riot in France soon?

Great thanks. So now there will be more water for the rich bourgeoisie to fill up their 20 bathtubs and swimming pools 🤘

Except there are no droughts in Toulouse and the rain’s levels and water reserves are ok :

      https://www.brgm.fr/fr/actualite/communique-presse/nappes-eau-souterraine-au-1er-mai-2025

So, once more people, we’re taking your money, everybody’s money, poor or rich people, the same levels, but remember : it’s for your own good.

Also, the same people who keeps on growing the local population (+50k people each 5 years in the immediately Toulouse’s metropolis for approx 800/900K total population) keeps on saying there’s less and less water.

Take a look at these morons here https://actu.fr/occitanie/toulouse_31555/population-toulouse-compte-desormais-511-684-habitants-et-va-devenir-3e-ville-de-france-tres-rapidement_62022339.html celebrating overpopulation of Toulouse and Montpellier.

Montpellier which is having the very same issues, with the very same reasons : overpopulation.

But I am sure adding 500000 more people to Toulouse in the next 30 years will fix things, rejoice, peasants !

As I said, their solution to the problem they’ve created themselves will always be : “oh, we hear your concerns, we’be decided to take more of your money”

Also, don’t miss their other best seller :

“Why do people vote for populists ???”

This is how price of water will slowly rise. I bet they won’t return to the same level after summer.
