Minorities are very often the proverbial canary in the coal mine for a society in distress. As the population in general suffer/are anxious/struggle the elite(or opportunistic opposition) will often co-opt minorities as a scapegoat for the genuine problems faced by the population. In addition, we need to accept the fact that hatred is a pleasure, it can give meaning, joy, pleasure to people. Minorities are, by virtue of their small numbers, always going to be vulnerable in this regard.

This is why you can’t just stay quiet about LGBT people and immigrants, you have to loudly and proudly defend them. If the only people talking about them are demonizing them, people will gravitate to that position. You have to advocate for good things as loudly as they advocate for bad things

We know that.
The worst are the people who think we should “take it easy” with LGBT rights so that the narrow minded conservatives aren’t triggered.
We need more political leaders with spine to be uncompromising on LGBT rights, and make it clear to the population that it’s not something negotiable.
Stop trying to appease bigots.

i’m 17 and lgbt. quite a lot of my peers (mostly male, from varying backgrounds) are openly homophobic. and our legacy media isn’t even throwing a full smear campaign like in other european countries. it’s quite scary, really, seeing my generation becoming a driving force behind radical parties because, unlike older voters who vote for them merely out of frustration, they actually feel represented by reactionary ideologies.

I think you have to remember how much the prevalence of lgbt people has increased in the last 15 years. In the UK 1.5% of the population identified as lgbt in 2010, now for young people it is 10.4%. Especially if you focus just on trans, I went from never even hearing about Trans people until probably around 2015, to it being a huge issue in politics, sports, and their being visible trans in high positions etc.
If you look at gender dysphoria amongst teenagers the stats are pretty insane:
– Uk increase of 5000% between 2011-2021
– Germany increase of 1200% between 2013-2022
– Denmark increase of 8,700% between 2014-2022
– Sweden increase 1500% between 2008-2024
That is an unbelievable increase. I am all for people being free to make their own choices and accepting people for who they are etc. But this is pretty scary when you consider all of the horrible mental health issues that are associated with gender dysphoria (Suicide rates ranging from 32-50% 10x the average for non trans people, depression etc). I think that you have to ask the question of how much of this is a persons nature being free to show their true selves, vs how much is the way we nurture people in to specific choices. This may be controversial but I would guess its a bit of nature and a bit of nurture. I have no doubt that a pretty sizeable number of people have gotten gender dysphoria, struggled with it and commited suicide, who would not have experienced gender dysphoria if they grew up 30 years ago when gender was not something which people commonly questioned.

Trans woman here. Is there any chance I can convince you of any of the following?
1) I’m not part of a leftist conspiracy to make your kids trans (being trans is just a thing some people are so no one can do that anyway).
2) I don’t want to take away your bible/gun/masculinity.
3) I’m not trying to be special or cool, in fact I hope someday being trans is by far the least interesting thing about me.
4) I’m not delusional for being trans (like, seriously, I was just born with stuff I didn’t like so I changed it, everything else is just bookkeeping.)
5) Trans women existing and being treated as a subgroup of women doesn’t diminish the status of cis women.
6) Trans people who have been on hormone therapy for years don’t have super significant differences in levels of athletic ability from cis people of the same gender.
7) “Cis” is a neutral, non-insulting term that is like “straight” or “white” I love a lot of cis people and I don’t want to hurt them.
8) So long as you respect us trans folks and leave us alone, none of us are going to force you to do or believe anything.
9) Gender dysphoria sucks and gender affirming care saves and drastically improves people’s lives.
10) Books about queer people are not inherently sexual.
11) I use the ladies room to avoid outing myself in public, not for some illicit sexual thrill or to assault cis women.
12) In general, people who are trying to scare you with the spooky “other” in society are running the oldest con in the book to pick your pocket.

This is why the overton window shifted and there’s political pushback against all this rainbow pride stuff. Most people couldn’t care less about what you do in your bedrooms or what gender you want to identify as. But when your main tactic becomes brainwashing kids and shoving it in everyone’s face, people start to have a problem.
If you’re very vocal about this kind of thing I don’t understand why you’re not posting on bluesky instead.

Yeah, the writing is on the wall.
Across the spectrum there’s just indifference to the queer community, the far right won’t hesitate in shouting random bullshit like “radioactive estrogen on the school milk for children” and the far left will discredit this topic under the false pretense that it’s all an elaborate plan from the ultra-rich to introduce identity politics to silence the poor and therefore such topic doesn’t deserve as much attention.
And in the in-between we have centrists that are the only ones somewhat interested on this topic but are way too willingly to drop the cause as political leverage in negotiations.
To top it off, the queer social movements have been progressively getting more chaotic due to never ending pursuit of ideological perfection. There’s no space in the community for anyone that doesn’t follow their ten commandments religiously.
It’s going to get worse until it gets the chance to get better. Being in a western country in Europe won’t be such a safe option either, I have experienced homophobia recently myself in Amsterdam (city where the youth just U-turned into being against homosexuality, by the way).
It stinks. It’s life. Fight for you rights.
