Ukraine did what it needed and will do so again and again until Putin taps, or he truly becomes the storied emperor with no strategic clothes.

And then perhaps he can beg tender mercy from serfs raised on a steady diet of barbarism and *dedovshchina.* Such a society finds cannibalism before it finds charity.

That is how the russian system works.

Power is stable with leverage. Leverage means you give some capacity to harm the leader which limits his power to other stakeholders. If any of them gets pissed off enough they can release it.

What is the only thing in Russia that would turn the public completely against him? What leverage could the other oligarchs have that they could drop to immediately destroy him?

What did he do that none of them would be willing to do to replace him by granting the same leverage? Because if you want to be the next Putin you would have to give leverage to the other power brokers.

So it has to be bad enough that it would take him down, and also something no one else seems willing to do.

How does a mediocre spy become the leader of the country? Probably being good at something like that.
