“Mr O’Callaghan will bring a memo to the Cabinet detailing the plans for 960 additional places across a number of prisons in the country.

Ministers will be told that prison capacity as a whole is at 115pc, with a new record high of 5,394 individuals in prison in mid-April. ”

Just eyeballing the maths here…but the additional 960 spaces will just about bring that 115% occupancy down to 100%?

Which is a good start I guess

We probably need closer to another 5960 places given the number of recidivists with 100+ convictions buts it’s a start. I actually told a FG canvasser at last GE I’d give my 1st preference to the party who’d build a new prison and he was momentarily speechless. Shows how out of touch some politicians are with ordinary people who don’t want live our country and society to become shitter year on year with unpunished crime. Amount of crime caused by those on bail is farcical.

Anything but building a new prison on a greenfield site.

Any takers over/under on a headline in a few years, “prison expansion costs spiral due to complexity of adding to existing buildings”
