Yes. As soon as my electricity contract is up in a few months, I will be switching, have not done for several years but my current supplier is now taking the piss.

The energy one in particular is more of a minor hassle penalty. There’s absolutely zero difference in quality or service from any of the electricity or gas companies. You need to shop around aggressively every year.
From what I can see it mostly penalises people who aren’t good at maths or dread the online form filling or maybe don’t have the ability to do it (especially older people.)
Insurance similarly is just a pain in the hole to switch — I find my broker worse than useless. You have to basically jolt them into action every year or then don’t do very much to save you money and just renew the policy with a fat brokerage fee! They do stuff when prompted with a phone call though!
Broadband is mostly very interchangeable, unless you’ve TV — and one or two of the ISPs have crappy backhaul — so it’s mostly likely for like but not entirely. Still very much worth shopping around and threatening to switch and speaking to “retentions”.

>In a market economy, we benefit from competition. We enjoy choice, innovation and, most of all, paying less. Price matters. But competition doesn’t work unless we, as consumers, play our part. It takes two to tango. Without active engagement from consumers, the benefits of competition stall.

My parents were with sky for about 17 years. Had a terrible SD box. Paid double what new customers pay. And new customers got a new fancy box. 2 years ago I had to call sky to see if they was anything they could do. At least get a hd box. They told me there was loyalty bonus online they were entitled to. So logged in to the folks account online and went to see what we got. They could rent Shrek 2, and get 25% off tickets for a show in the west end. Absolute joke. Folks now have a dodgybox

Sky are the absolute worst for this. They’ll straight up triple your monthly fees for staying with them.

Always switch, if that is not an option threaten to leave to see what kind of ‘Save’ offer they can give you.

Set a reminder for about a week before your gas/electricity/broadband expires, then go to [switcher.ie](http://switcher.ie) and find the best deal. Been doing it for years now and saved loads of money.

House insurance as well…. current insurance renewal€600, new quote with the same place €480. Different insurance company €450.

Not on car insurance. Three years running my renewal is half the price of the nearest competitor.

Is it anything like insurance companies’ “yes claims increase”?

This is common practice for a while. Shop around and change as often as you can, no rewards for loyalty anymore. Just keep notes of your account numbers and set reminders 2 weeks before contracts expire. Easy peasy.

I’d you’re not using a dodgy box in this day of age. You really need to have a long hard look at yourself

New customers: Every great deal under the sun.
Existing customers for years and years: Fuck you, pay me. Oh, and we’re putting our prices up 5% every 6 months. Suckers!

I used to work for an English phone company beginning with E and ending in E selling bill pay contracts, I specifically worked in retentions where our goal was to overcharge as much as possible, and the best deal we could possibly be haggled down to was worse than anything a new customer would get. If we did give someone the best deal possible, it would also negatively effect our bonus

My car insurance premium was higher than last year, despite making no claims, not changing any of my details etc. I phoned them up and said I was looking at an online quote from another provider for €120 less and was there anything they could do. Their reply? “You should just switch to them then, that’s what I’d do”
