That’s just crazy. Are there any other countries with such a narrow income tax base? Surely everyone should be paying some income tax

Almost a quarter are considered too poor to pay income tax.
So tax credits account for the overwhelming majority of them. Meaning that potentially most of those people are actually low income and/or have distinct difficulty circumstances that are alleviated through tax credits. I’m guessing there’ll be plenty of it’s all millionaires not paying their taxes comments but if I’m reading this correctly it’s potentially an issue with pay levels and circumstances that’s beyond just tax avoidance?
No party wants to address this because, as needed as it is, it will be wildly unpopular.
The stage our 40% higher tax bracket kicks in has always been a joke. Along with deemed disposal on ETFs, tax on investments and benefits in kind, it feels like you’re hobbled for doing well and daring to escape the rat race.

Absolutely no need to change that. It’s worth pennies to the budget compared to the effect it would have on low income people.
It would be shocking to change this after FFG have been cutting the higher rate.
Did a self build there a few years ago and about 95% of the people paid were cash in hand. The size of our black economy is staggering. Wouldnt have gotten or afforded the help otherwise.
It’s impossible. They just wrote that the average salary is €1,000 per week. It’s impossible that we earn so much and don’t pay taxes.

They may not pay income tax. But they certainly still get taxed up the arse with all the other taxes.
I’m not surprised, the number of minimum wage jobs advertised has doubled. People are skint. No wonder they are turning the chippers into brothels. Can you pay for your special box with a happy ending.
Others have pointed out this is because people aren’t income taxed until their earnings exceed their eligible benefits, if they were to stop working.

So this tax system seems to be kind of working.
I assume these are all folks on minimum wage type jobs? I have no problem with these folks not paying taxes. However, if this includes Rich or Wealthy people finding some way to dodge taxes with credits then its a huge problem.
I wish people stop posting click bait headlines from the independent. It’s basically a tabloid now.
