How is this different from the current digital visa system? Employers and landlords can already check for status with Home Office’s right to work share code system.

Digital ID is definitely starting to be a thing instead of IDcards. I renewed my driving licence recently and I had to down load a government identity app before it would let me. It’s ID cards on the sneak.

They need a cheap physical national id card alternative to passports and driving licenses

Orwell had it right about the UK – He just forgot to consider governments never deliver projects on schedule.

    5. IMO this is essential for a few reasons.

      – It removes the ability of people to use forged documents, which is currently less of an issue but still happens
      – it removes the need for plastic cards and the waste and administration associated with producing them
      – it can collate all of your things into one easy to manage place. Currently the systems of passports, driving licenses, welfare benefits, business registrations are all so disconnected, it’s often farcical applying for or renewing certain things.

I know alot of people have reservations about ‘ID cards’ but realistically most people have some form of id card or another anyway. Having a technologically integrated government is so much more efficient and will not increase surveillance any more than it currently is. Most people are already happy to let USA companies farm tonnes of data about them, but then cry dictator when government wants to implement something that just makes sense.

I would draw the line at the government being involved in your money, like WeChat/WePay/AliPay in China, but for any other essential citizen to government business, it should all be in one place and streamlined.

How exactly does this stop people ***already breaking the law*** as is?

What a waste of time and billions on 10 years of consultancies before even a plan is put in place.

    7. It seems Blair might finally get his ID card dream a generation after sowing the seeds that lead to a 10 million person increase in the UK population since he became PM.

      Thanks Tony.

I used to be very opposed to ID cards and any accompanying digital ID, but I’ve come to realise we already have all the downsides, but none of the upsides.

As it stands, everyone in the country already has a form of digital ID in the form of the myriad credit reporting agencies, but it’s not authoritative, and you have basically no recourse if it’s wrong.

At least if it were in the government’s hands you’d have some kind of redress, and businesses could more simply rely on it.

Seems like we’re getting all the shit parts of New Labour and none of the good parts tbh

Wonder if this hypothetical ‘BritCard’ app would require an active internet connection to work 🤔

They might get away with calling it UK Club Express.

Just so Tony Blair can make another 100m
These people are as corrupt as the last party.

More authoritarianism then. Thanks a lot Tony Blair.

The government has all our details anyway for driving licenses, council tax, passports etc

This should have been done years ago

It would cut down on illegal workers
