Just to address some points that usually come up on the Birmingham bin posts…
No, the whole city isn’t like that picture. Most areas are getting weekly collections with the occasional missed week where they pick up any side rubbish the week after. Shit areas which are usually strewn with filth are even more strewn with filth and that makes a good news article. The city centre is also basically unaffected as businesses have private waste collection.
Yes it’s annoying at times. We’ve had no recycling collection for a long time, so it feels a bit 80s just lobbing all your plastic in the bin. Yes it’s a terrible advert for a city trying to shake off a largely undeserved reputation. But we’re not all fighting rats every day. A few times on our road a bag left by a full wheelie bin on missed weeks has been ripped open by foxes with some litter about the place, but reasonable people usually tidy their filth.
Some of the student areas with the posher students moan about the filth, but it’s always filth and they always moan about it, which strikes me as a bit rich since it’s their filth and 99% of them are incapable of moving their wheelie bin off the footway.
Edit: I need to look up “filth” in a thesaurus because that’s a lot of repetition.

Why doesn’t the Labour government intervene here? The local Birmingham council is clearly out of their depth.

Perhaps they shouldn’t be giving the staff an 8k pay cut

When do we get a sensible conversation about council tax rebates? You simply can’t expect to take the best part of an additional 20% extra tax over two years and fail to provide a key service for an entire year
