I suppose I’d have more sympathy for the message, were it not a woman who adopts them essentially saying she should be given cash.

No I’m sorry, but when e.g. maternity leave is only £187/week, paying someone to have a pet dog is just a joke. If we had lots of surplus, sure, that’d be lovely.

Research has proven that guide dogs, force dogs, etc., that are under pressure to carry out duties have a shorter lifespan than their counterparts. I always questioned how these dogs can be put out for “adoption” with no real safety net. One of the richest countries on the planet, yet we rely on charities and the goodwill of the public to look after these loyal animals in retirement. Do better.

If police forces are going to be breeding, training and putting dogs in dangerous situations for a job it makes sense that they should at least then pick up the vet bill after retirement.

If they have a higher than average chance of needing veterinary care as they get older directly related to their working lives, then yes it should be covered by their previous employer.

I know accidents can happen and no one can guarantee that an animal won’t get sick, but if there’s proven data that is more likely then vets bills should be covered after adoption. For all service animals.

There’s homeless on the street and folk want to give dogs private pensions.

If the dog can’t be looked after financially any other way then I agree that money should be given, dogs are incredibly loyal and loving and deserve to have good lives but if someone has a dog that they can just hand over to someone else or a charity or a place to find them new owners then that should be the way instead of financial support, if you can’t finally support the dog that you are looking after and responsible for then you shouldn’t get a dog.

Or just put down and save the tax payer, do charity on your own pound not mine

No cash should be paid . But their pet passport should show that they are ex service animals and therefore eligible for free/discounted vet services

My dad used to work on the dogs. When the dog retired it became the family pet for the end of it’s years. Got a photo of toddler me with 2 GSDs towering above me. Loved those dogs.

You know, I couldn’t agree more. Police dogs should absolutely get a pension. They seem to be the only ones doing real policing anymore.

so just a greedy woman wanting money? Nice way to wrap a pretty story around it

Medical bills absolutely would be in favour, giving some wee cow cash? no

The cheapest solution is to accelerate the slow marching of time and bring forward the inevitable.

If we use the dog in such a way that it is exposed to death and injury in its job, than yes we should pay it’s medical bills in later life.

The British are meant to be animal lovers, but the comments here clearly display what a bunch of c***s some have become.

And by the way, humans are animals, dogs do have emotions, some animals have better emotional awareness than we do, some humans don’t have internal monologues. Humans arent that special

I know Brits really love pets, and dogs in particular, but it seems pretty nuts that we’re talking about using police or taxpayer money to give £2000/yr retirement funds to dogs given the number of other things they don’t have enough money to do already.

There are already enough people who will adopt these dogs without that, and insurers who will insure the vet costs, that I don’t see any need to do that.

Free vet care, food etc. Cash just leaves too many people abusing the system for money sadly.
