Just wait until he hears about the increases in defence spending on the cards here in Ireland.

      > The prime minister next door [Keir Starmer] says: ‘We are going to produce drones that are 10 times more lethal.’ Think of the morality of that statement,” said Mr Higgins.

While I suppose I am cautiously supportive of weakening our oldest foe and biggest geopolitical risk, I don’t think there is anything noble in limiting yourself to spears and bows and arrows

That’s a not very much money, especially considering fascism is on the rise. I usually agree with Higgins but I think he’s a bit naive on this issue.

Ya let’s just let Russia take Ukraine and praise ourselves as peace advocates. He is president of a country that had to take up arms to end imperialism.

    5. qwerty_1965 on

Why is this man commenting on the policies of another state?

    6. caisdara on

He’s always rather slow to mention that Russia is the cause of a massive rearmament in Europe married to the Trump repudiation of NATO.

You’d almost think he’s an old tankie who quietly likes Russia.

It’s bizarre he can be so loud on Israel and so silent on Russia.

    7. ZestycloseBeach5946 on

As much as I normally agree with him on things I think he is being overly idealistic here. Russia has stated multiple times it views the UK as one of its biggest global threats so investing in its defence might help prevent any future issues rather than cause it. If one side believes itself much more powerful than the other it makes military action more likely.

    8. When we can’t functionally defend ourselves we should be glad that our neighbour can, and allow us to hide behind fake neutrality at the same time.

He’s not fit for office anymore then. Nobody with some sanity left in his body would criticise such move in the current climate.

Literally all Higgins says in any way about the UK arms is the following: .

      > “The prime minister next door [Keir Starmer] says: ‘We are going to produce drones that are 10 times more lethal.’ Think of the morality of that statement,” said Mr Higgins.

      That’s it.

Perfectly reasonable statement. Followed it up by saying you can’t remain silent in the current climate.

Yet the same goons in the press will be calling him a
      “tankie” who “supports Russia”.

I can’t say I’m a fan of him criticising other countries defence decisions.

Can’t imagine many would be happy if Charles, his uk counterpsrt, started talking about Irish policies.

    12. The likes of Michael D and Catherine Connolly really are just anti-American and anti-UK contrarians.

They’re better off sticking to domestic politics and protesting air shows than commenting on anything related to Russia.

    13. iGleeson on

I love the man, but socialist boomer ideologies seem tied to this weird Russophilia that I don’t see in young socialists. It’s the same kind of Soviet adoring brain rot that has led to the rise of Russian ultra nationalism and the invasion of Ukraine.

    14. Natural-Ad773 on

Fairly ridiculous statement when our own air and sea defence is more reliant on UK investment than it is on our own defence forces.

It must be great to live a life with such a moral superiority.

    15. bungle123 on

Obviously it’s in the UK’s best interest to make a show of strength in the face of Russian aggression. You can make the argument that Starmers claim of the lethality of the drones is tasteless, but the whole point of it is to dissuade Russia from trying anything in the first place. Its naive of Higgins to be undermining the defence strategies of the country who we ourselves rely on for defense, and thinking he has the right to tone police Starmer on the issue of defense in the face of Russian aggression is incredible arrogance.

Ireland is not a neutral country. We are surrounded by strong countries that are neutral towards us. We ride on that privilege.

      This is silly

There is a war coming to Europe again in the coming years and we shouldn’t be critical of the powers in Europe for heavily investing in arms, technology and defence.

We are going to be the least harmed in any upcoming conflicts and a lot of that will be because several defensive buffers we find between ourselves and the east

Drone technology is already rapidly progressing thinking UK investment is going to somehow slow down the advance of the progression of hostile nations is naive. It’s time to start looking at things realistically. Europe needs to arm up. We can’t even trust the US anymore, who’s to say Europe won’t be cut up once again in the potential aftermath like post WW2 Europe?

    19. Team-Name on

Skeptical that the UKs Military Keynesianism is driven solely by the war in Ukraine. I reckon the main motive is to grow the economy. Labours austerity policy isn’t helping to undo the damage of the previous 15 years of Tory austerity, pressure is growing from the electorate, Reform are knocking on the door, and they are too idealogically tied to their fiscal rules to win votes back by improving public services.
Increased spending on defence tends to be the main execption to fiscal belt-tightening for centrist libs, therefore increased spending on defence is their new strategy to grow the economy ala the US model. Higgins is absolutely right about the morality of manufacturing more lethal drones, as we know from the past 20 years of conflict in the middle East the target of drone strikes tend to often be civilians, the saber rattling NAFO shoneen brigade on here will no doubt disagree.

Can’t wait for this clown to retire into irrelevance. The presidential election is taking it’s time getting here.

    21. EffectiveNew8489 on

If Ireland ends up with a Peter Casey or Michael McGrath figure for President issuing utterances that “there are too many foreigners in our sheets today” we can look at how President Higgins fundamentally altered the role of the office. People seem to not mind because he appears cute and cuddly but if a right wing xenophobic candidate was elected then the tune would change.

Europe is living in lalaland, leaders across the board seem to think that all those regimes are friendly and can be talked out of war. They dont care about emotions, they only respect power. Military might is what holds them back, no much else. Im talking about china, russia, iran, north korea and the likes. You cannot change my mind.

And all the people saying “USA bad” think for a minute if they didnt have such powerful earthly military, we would be speaking either chinese or arabic or russian. If you dont understand that, you my friend are delusional
