      – End-to-End encryption ban

      – VPN ban

      – Mandatory data retention for messaging service providers

      – Anonymous cash transaction limits

      – Digital ID

      – Prepaid SIM ban

These proposals are coming left and right I can’t keep up anymore, is this what russians feel like

I’m fairly positive it’s possible to fight against crime without draconian measures like this.

Also. If you close one avenue of security they’ll just open up another one. It’s not like the law enforcement has even been ahead of the bad guys on cyber anything, EVER.

And who will still say that the EU acts for the benefit of the people?

    4. ApproximateFungus on

We need this to, umm, fight crime! Yes, it’s against crime because people use those SIM cards to stab dogs!

It _definitely_ isn’t to limit free speech or cater to copyright lobbyists. How ridiculous!

Do they also want to demand everyone show ID in post office before they can mail an envelope? Ofcourse nomore drop off postal boxes, since how could you identify senders on those.

I seem to remember such thing as letter and communication secrecy being pretty important thing.

    6. At this point we might as well start sending letters via post, just remember to seal them with wax beforehand. Nothing can beat tried and true methods.

    7. EU is becaming a surveillance dictatorship to save the democracy, it’s done to protect us

As always this is just a quick fix to a complex problem.

They’ll end up using fake IDs to verify and the guy who got his data harvested in 2023 will have le interrogate him.

No, sir. Grandma Smith 70yo was not part of the ransomware heist.

Sure there must be more efficient ways.

Pretty sure some Russian/Chinese backed group is trying to overload EU with all these proposals and spark division and anti-EU movements.

    10. late stage capitalism prices when spending money, socialism when paying taxes and communist control from the government

      truly the best combination

Was it even possible to buy one in the first place without an ID? I know shady shops exist but it wasnt readily available anyways.

I understand anonymous SIMs being banned. But the rest of privacy should really be left as is, including end to end encryption and similar. Especially VPNs should be left untouched.

That the ban is even being considered means that it works, and I am glad it does.

Then again, I understand the need of being able to track criminals. But this is where cyber intelligence comes into play. So yeah, step up your own game, don’t try to ban protections that were put in place against bad hackers.

And, of course, it’s for our own good and safety!

Seriously, I would say what should be done with these creatures who make such proposals, but I have a feeling that I would quickly get banned for it…

In Belgium they have been banned since the terrorism attacks in Brussels. Did not prevent organised crime one bit.

It’s a typical measure that seems logical on paper to prevent crime but in reality…

    15. Funny-Jump-8571 on

They are already not anonymous in some countries, like Poland.

    16. FelizIntrovertido on

Banned in Spain since 2004 terrorist attacks. Very easy to use to explode bombs.

    17. Just_Ban_Me_Already on

Ban this, ban that, ban everything.

      EU slowly becoming totalitarian.

    18. I don’t see downsides to this ban, already a thing in several eu countries and even article author struggles to find any arguments against

    19. VicenteOlisipo on

A radical step to stop televote manipulation on the Eurovision Song Contest, but a necessary one.

    20. Frenzystor on

I didn’t know there was a country where you could still buy them.

    21. alexbottoni on

In Italy, you cannot buy a SIM without a valid ID card since year 2000. It should go this way without saying…

    22. Burnandcount on

To have any meaningful impact they’ll have to ban foreign VOIP porting services and end-to-end encryption and VPN…. as much use as shouting into a thunderstorm 🤣

    23. Why is this controversial? I’m frankly tired of phone scammers.
