I never buy anything but Flexpreis to save myself the headaches.
In my experience, just talk to either a person at the DB counter or a train conducter in the next train you take. A delay causing a changeover time of less than say 4 minutes is usually accepted, and a DB worker will lift your train binding. They are usually very reasonable.
Do you have to transfer between the lower and the upper level, or will you stay on the same level? (In the former case, the lifts are very slow, so use the escalators if you don’t have mobility issues)
