In a display of extraordinary largesse, Westminster Council just handed out lifetime tenancies to all social housing residents – gifting the equivalent of a lottery win, paid for by taxpayers.
A Westminster tenancy saves you ~£25k/year in rent – over £1M+ across a lifetime, potentially heritable.
In some census areas (like E00023951), 80% live in subsidised housing, less than half are employed, and two-thirds were born overseas. And now the council has *removed* the small priority it gave to working applicants, who might slightly benefit from being in central London.
> “New applicants will not receive additional points for being in employment.”
Nick, 30, working full-time, paying 60% marginal tax rates and renting privately, is now subsidising lifelong housing in W1.
Incredible stuff.

Wow. Makes you wonder why you bother trying to contribute to society sometimes.

Everybody who has a tenancy now benefits, to the detriment of everybody who would qualify in the future.

Ermm, no, that’s not why the public gives its money in tax.
Council tenants should be dispersed out of London.
Fair and simple.
Their children would enjoy growing up in a suburban area anyway.

This could really help stabilize communities and support vulnerable residents long-term.

Useless you’re removed for anti-social behaviour or arrears, this is pretty much how council tenancies work anyway. That’s why we have little old dears under occupying three bedroom houses they got in the 60s and moaning they need more subsidising to heat them.

The idea of lifetime anything is generally a bad idea. It’s never fair

Council housing used to be lifetime, it was there to give people stable affordable homes to bring up families and to allow them to contribute more to the economy without the worry of being turfed out because the landlord wants a holiday or new car, as not everyone in social/council housing is claiming benefits many are in work.
This isn’t a bad thing it just stops funnelling rent into private landlords’ pockets, and allows more of the tenants’ income to be spent in the economy

Privatisation is a topic which is obviously controversial in the UK – but selling off council houses in Westminster would surely fund 4x the number of houses elsewhere plus also free up a bunch of valuable central London property for HENRYs who can make way better use of it?

Given to people not born in this country nor have they have made a significant contribution in taxes.
The system is broken.

Labour making people want to quit their jobs again 🙂
Really makes sense why they call us the working class. Life long residencies for them in Westminster, while families can’t buy houses because we get out bid by Blackrock. I’m so done with this bs.

Social housing tenancies *should* last a lifetime. If that’s an issue it’s because we don’t build enough social housing. Not because people dare to live in the housing provided to them.

Are tenancies review periodically to test if a tenant is still in need? If not, then what is the issue?

I love that they’ve removed the priority for those in employment. The final ‘f you’ to the young professional who could only dream of living in Zone 1.
Some graduates will be earning less than the money saved in rent versus renting in the private sector. The social contract well and truly arse-wiped.

Don’t worry the council did a poll first, in which they asked the residents (the majority who are in council housing) if they wanted a free house for life
Shockingly most said yes
For everyone else, taxes rise again soon don’t worry to fund this…

They should also have a clause that says the tenants should maintain the properties to a decent degree. Some council tenants’ front gardens are just one big dumping ground, making the area look worse than it is. Take some pride in the property and not have blankets hanging up at the windows, making the place look like a squat. If people get the privilege to have been given a council house/flat, respect it.

In a borough which has up to[ 10 year waiting lists](https://centreforlondon.org/westminster/) for properties.
