      Long story short:

Labour have announced the Winter Fuel allowance will now be made to all people above retirement age who annually earn £35,000 or less.

    2. elon_musks_account on

So, to address the elephant in the room: who’s going to pay the cost? No surprise, it’ll be those who can be arsed to work and won’t see their own pension until they’re 90.

    3. Opposite_Boot_6903 on

      >It estimates that around nine million people – more than three-quarters of all pensioners – will receive the payment this winter.

Fucks sake. There aren’t 9 million people in need of this payment.

    4. Financial-Couple-836 on

This is too high to be fair to working people, it’s almost the median wage and most pensioners don’t pay rent or mortgage.

    5. Sorry but 35k is BS. More than minimum wage so we should start paying winter fuel payments to those below 35k then yeah if these pensioners need it?

Some of my mates work their arses off for less than 35k and they’re not getting their winter fuel paid for.

    6. gardnermatt00 on

£35k is more than most young people make. it’s not far off the median wage across the UK.

So the idea that a generation which largely owns their own house: so have no rent/mortgage will get financial help, but not people who work 40 hour weeks and make far less and have rent to pay is insulting.

    7. All-Day-stoner on

The most privileged generation get more handouts as the younger generations pick up the bill.

    8. kahnindustries on

How about none of them, how about they use that money to drag the lives out of the gutter for the people that fund this country

    9. Alive-Turnip-3145 on

Am I reading that correctly it’s personal income of £35,000. So a household can earn £69,999.98 and get two payments. Likewise a household with one person earning over £100,000 and the other on £34,999 would also get the payment.

Regardless, this money is going to help a lot of millionaire pensioners with fully paid off houses.

    10. ShondaVanda on

They did lots of analysis and the pensioner stuff was marked as one of the key drags on their ratings in polls, so thats why they’ve reversed and been so generous it basically wont save any money now.

    11. Low_Map4314 on

Of course, and the young get fucked over more by paying even more taxes. What a load of crap

    12. If pensioners who are receiving £35k p/a need help to pay for their fuel perhaps it is time to raise the national living wage inline with that figure so that those who are working 40+ hours a week can heat their homes too?

    13. Sly_Bags355 on

The pensioner can be earning under 35k a year AND be living in a million pound paid up house.

It’s so wrong. Anyone living in their private home should be excluded off the bat.

    14. AdAggressive9224 on

Sad to see those who actually make a contribution are getting shat on by this government, again more short term pandering to pensioners. Labour just became the Tories.

    15. Good_Old_KC on

35k are they taking the piss?!

There are millions of people still working who are on less than 35k where’s their help to pay bills?

    16. gr1msh33p3r on

I’ve been a Labour member for years but Im teetering here. The statement on Wednesday better do something for me otherwise Im cancelling my membership.

Pensioners on £35k a year do not need a £300 handout.

1.EVIL red tories HATE pensioners, leave them to all freeze to DEATH without winter fuel allowance

2.EVIL Rachel thieves wants to hand BILLIONS of YOUR money to millionaire pensioners in winter fuel allowance

    18. JinxxMachina on

Excellent! So now my father, living mortgage-free in his £800,000 home, can claim this benefit on top of his state and private pensions, while his daughter is stuck in a house share, struggling to save a penny. Meanwhile, my mother works 40 hours a week just to cover the basics, with nothing left for anything beyond mere survival.

How can anyone possibly justify this?

    19. 360Saturn on

So pensioners earning *more than the average working income*, **each**.

So a household with an income of nearly 70k a year gets a free £600 out of everyone’s taxes ‘to help with fuel payments’ while a household just down the road where the mum is disabled and actually needs an electric blanket or something, but is under pension age, gets nothing. Make it make sense.

    20. NikolaVandal on

What’s mad about the so-called winter fuel payment is that is nothing to do with fuel at all.

Does its value change in response to energy prices? No.

Does its value change depending on the pensioners energy costs and setup? No.

Is it paid directly to the energy provider for their house? No.

Its literally just a £300 cash bribe to pensioner that just so happens to be given to them in winter.

    21. masalamerchant on

Fuck this, I’m absolutely fuming. My dad said about £35k last week and I said that was way too high. Full time worker on minimum wage makes £25k and has housing costs, they get no help. Then so many disabled people both in and out of work are facing cuts to PIP and universal credit, including the work allowance that helps people taper off UC.

What an unequal and unfair society we live in. Cripples will be sent to work in home care for £12.50 an hour, wiping the arses of their masters who sit in warm homes without a care in the world. This is awful

    22. FedoraTippingKnight on

People are missing whats even worse about this policy, its not even paid directly to their supplier like the warm home discount, but to their personal bank account. So there’s no control on what it’s spent on or whether that individual is even in the UK. This is just a bribe by the government to win votes.

    23. Chriswheela on

So as a single income 36 year old with a kid on the way. I should just go f*ck myself?

    24. RegenerEight on

Also the BBC’s call for comments on this is a fucking joke: Are you a pensioner who earns more than £35,000? What do you think about today’s announcement?

Pathetic. How about hearing from the people who will be footing this bill.
