I’m sorry but I’m a leftie and this is something I support. It’s the 21st century. There is no legitimate reason to hide your face. No religion compels it and it’s just weird. I’m not sugar coating by it. It’s a backwards tradition that belongs in the stone age. I get some women *choose* to wear it, and that’s their decision, but it makes me uncomfortable. And the fact is most women are pressured in to wearing it by the men in their lives.
It’s human nature to want to see who you’re talking to and interacting with, and I don’t think it’s fair to label people as bigoted or racist for feeling that way.
And yes, integrating in the U.K. does actually mean accepting *our* social normals. Integrating isn’t allowing immigrants to import their own cultural beliefs and norms – it’s the complete opposite. There’s room for a bit of give and take, but ultimately if you want cohesion in society then it means accepting British cultural norms.

Is Badenoch a complete idiot? Any Muslim woman wearing a burka will be forbidden from working by her husband. It is the ultra orthodox view that a woman shouldn’t be seen by anyone except her husband or male family member, plus not be allowed out unaccompanied, which definitely means not going out to work
This is just more racist dog-whistling from a political party desperate to hang on to its racist, baby boomer membership

This is exactly the calibre of ‘policy’ I’ve come to expect from this truly ludicrous iteration of the Tory party – meaningless, performative, and painfully unoriginal distractions from the real issues facing the nation. They simply have nothing better to offer.

I’ve never even seen anyone in a workplace wear a burka.

Employers already have the discretion to ban it. Why’s she calling for something that already exists?

So restaurants should have the right to police their female employees clothing choices, but not to exclude criminals and thugs from their premises?
I have to say Kemi is all over the place on businesses rights.

Don’t think it’s right to ban it outright, however it should absolutely not be allowed in hospitals, schools and any kind of social work.
There’s no way anyone with a straight face can tell me it’s not a oppressive way to dress, but ultimately it’s not for the state to intervene. I’ll leave that to the men in their family forcing them to dress that way.

I must admit, I am not behind this at all… But….
One of my first jobs was making ID cards, and one colleague wore a burka. Honestly it made the photo ID useless, because it could be anyone under there.

She’s absolutely spot on, I walked into hooters and all the girls were wearing Burkas. Really took away from enjoying their tatas

Purely performative. If you didn’t want an employee wearing a burka, you just wouldn’t hire them in the first place. Not that I imagine many would even be in the workplace to start with.

And this is a big problem, is it?
Are these women allowed to work? A few maybe?
Presumably the very, very few who might will now not actually be doing those jobs, but instead… not doing those jobs.
So what problem have we solved here? A vanishingly small minority is no longer in ‘workplaces’.
Farage’s lot want of course to ban these women from public. I guess they’re going to have police going around ensuring that people are making correct clothing choices. You can of course cover your face with sunglasses and masks (for health reasons). But covering up for being a Muslim? That’s immoral! Get the morality police to stop it!
Imagine being the leader of the opposition and seeing Farage’s party want to ban all Burkas entirely and then come up with a watered down version that is basically meaningless. That’s what you want to spend your time doing?

I’d like to see even one instance of a woman in a burqa, in a workplace that didn’t want them to be in that burqa.
Like, legitimately, I don’t think there is even one instance of that.
Businesses should be able to discriminate to some degree of course. If you’re working around machinery, you *must* wear clothes that are safe around that machinery. Or you straight up cannot do that job. If a woman is required to wear a burqa, the business *must* discriminate against religious/or any clothing because it impedes her ability to the do the job safely. But again, I truly do not believe an instance of this has ever occurred…

Now they want the government telling people what clothes to wear?
They’re so ideologically confused these days.

Politicians really have a gift of focusing on non issues. Couldn’t speak about how many people can’t afford bills, childcare or housing. Rather let’s focus on a tiny minority who aren’t even in the workplace to begin with.

More dog whistles for the racists and more hate and division pumped out by corporate media. Won’t work for the Tories Kemi, the racists already have their cult leader Farage.
It’s vile seeing political parties crawling over each other to see who can be the biggest hate preacher.

I dont think they’re worn for religious reasons. It’s more politics and letting people around them know that they aren’t like them.
During the 90s i remember being told by a muslim man that only old people wear them and that the young didnt want to.
Then obviously there was some deteriation of relations in the early 2000s and all of sudden they were everywhere.
My point being, there’s no point banning them if they are only a symptom of something deeper.
They should solve the problem of them wanting to wear them in the first place.
