I’ll never understand Online Ireland’s obsession with gatekeeping Irishness. Like if someone insists that they’re Irish based on a single ancestor back in 1680 that’s one thing, especially if they try to impose politics on Ireland.
But if someone is born abroad to Irish parents and considers themselves Irish, I’d still see them as Irish, especially as their home life would be heavily influenced by Ireland.
Likewise, I’ve seen lads post on here saying variations of “Hi I’m Irish American and interested in learning more about my ancestors culture. What’s some good books to read” only to be met by “NOOOO YOU’RE AMERICAN. NOT IRISH AMERICAN”. Like even when an American says they’re Irish, it’s shorthand for Irish American rather than them saying they’re literally from Ireland and not the US.
