6 months later – “the UK has today negotiated a 99 year lease with Spain for 10 sunbeds in exchange for the return of the territory and 100 billion pounds.”

Poor Spain, they aren’t prepared for the amount of accrued soft power that’s about to hit them

The government could do a lot worse than appointing Daniel Levy as chief negotiator for *everything*

Hopefully they continue to include Gibraltar in any agreements over their territory

Problems will be discussed, argued about and ignored. Smiling delegates will announce that talks were progressive and fruitful. Like everyone else, they know it’s a complete waste of time.

Spain will be pissed off about things as they are and continue to make the border crossing as awkward as possible for everyone.

The people of Gibraltar, in 1967 and 2002 overwhelmingly voted to remain with Britain by over and almost 99% respectively of votes cast. The second one was held to send the message that the people of Gibraltar had no interest in even having negotiations over shared sovereignty.

That needs to be the central element of any negotiations. Am I certain it will be? No, and especially not after the Chagos fiasco.

Spain is not a friendly country in terms of foreign policy, much less so than France or Portugal
