Heh, many would even question their commitment to anything other than power or money in the first instance.

Yeah. Well, they’re obviously correct to doubt them.

I’m far from an FF/FG supporter but let’s remove the bias goggles.

Many of us doubt that the north would vote in favour of unity. So what exactly do they want FF and FG or other parties to do?

Sweet talk the DUP/TUF/UUP in how life outside the Union is better? They won’t budge on that nor will their voter base

Just because they don’t pay lip services to “unity” like SF doesn’t mean anything but loud PR.

Unity won’t happen because of SF/FF/FG. It comes down to if a poll is setup in north and south and if both communities vote in favour and only then.

When do we have the poll is thing. No party wants to jump on it unless they are sure their preference will win, and while we’re closer to that than ever, the polls today don’t paint a guaranteed preference.

Edit: people don’t want to remove the bias goggles. Downvote away if it feels good, won’t actually make a United ireland happen unless you accept the conditions

Speaking as Northern Nationalist myself, it seems pretty transparent that Martin cynically doesn’t want a united Ireland because it would be adding Sinn Féin’s heartlands to the electorate.

Micheal Martin is openly hostile to anyone from the north….he hates em

Many people in the republic, myself included, have a romantic ideal of a United Ireland.

“sure wouldnt it be great. It would be great to see it.”

But in realpolitik, we arent ready. Nowhere close. And he’s right, FF and FG dont want it. They are clinging on with every fibre of their being to power. Eventually they will merge into a new entity or be usurped by a new political party that will take their vote away. But until then, they just want to stay in control
and the civil service wants them to stay in control. No vision, no passion. Nawthin’.

As for Northern Nationalists, youre playing a stormer, keep doing what you’re doing.

Northern Unionists are there, and will always be there, but their movement and their cause is dead. There is no obvious way forward for them.

One of the reasons Id like to live another 30/40 years is to see how all this plays out. Politics north and south will experience a radical change in that time. It simply has to. The dam has to burst soon.

He probably realises we don’t have the 15 billion euro annually it will take to replace the UK Government.

Even if FFG managed to pull off a successful united Ireland, because its so central to SF’s ideology it would be a defacto victory and largely associated with them, in my opinion.
