Thsi is a fantastic rundown of what happened and how quickly the bullshit spread. I remember 40 mins after the incident a relative in carlow sharing a whats app screenshot message that a muslim with a suicide vest had killed multiple kids with a shotgun and was trying to blow himself up. Some sick bastard had even included a photo of a shooting where some poor child had been shot in the head and was lying motionless on the ground. The car reg in the background was an entirely different colour than irish reg, and the cars were driving on the right hand side in the photo. Thats how fucking stupid this shit is.

The right wing loons are the ones who spread this shit.
But much of the posting is outsourced or supported by bots to give the impression that there is some ground swell of support.

But when you see how few turn up to protests and how many are the type that are easily influenced or have other issues.

You see that without social media this shite would have died out years ago.

The dogs on the street know who is whipping this shit up constantly.

Blighe, Pepper, Dywer, Barrett, Lahive, Gript etc.

The bigger question is why were not doing anything about it.

There was an incident in Citywest IPA centre a while back where some of the residents had gotten in a brawl. There was a post circulating on Whats App showing Arabs attack an ambulance claiming it was from Citywest. It was edited to make the setting ambiguous enough. I did an reverse search on Google and it was from back around the time of the Arab Spring in another country. Funny how these people who claim to do their own research believe anything that’s shown to them.

Some of the messages and videos flying around in the couple of hours after the shooting were just bonkers stuff.

The prompt response of air ambulance AC112 was even spun out into the Ranger Wing landing in town by some.

It was an information vacuum because you know *it had just happened* but people were just desperate to know what was going on.

I suppose it’s a consequence of the modern information age. In the past, you had to wait until it hit the radio perhaps. Now, it has to be instantly available at your fingertips.

You just can’t believe anything you read.

A while back, after the De La Salla Primary school was sold off, some woman from the area would go down to the school every evening and live stream on Faceache that is was going to be refugees. Yet there were plans available to see that new apartments were being built.

Then, another time… the old Nissan building at the Naas Road. Some far right dickhead took a picture of it and said about all the mattress in there and it being an IPAS centre…eh no, that is Diamond Furnitures warehouse you absolute asshole.

These people want to incite violence. They want to scaremonger and I think the person who starts it off should be jailed.

This wouldn’t be a problem if such a huge % of the population weren’t so fucking stupid. Why would you get your news from social media instead of verified sources who fact check things before publishing?

When that shooting happened I was getting all my info from RTE and Irish Times website so I didn’t even hear any of this nonsense.

The digital footprint of these people making racist and uneducated comments should not be forgotten. Too often, it’s ‘ah, don’t mind that he makes mad racist comments online, he’s harmless’, and that is completely wrong. People need to be held accountable for what they write online. One local musician in my area plays the pubs and is a complete right-wing loser online, always commenting about how COVID wasn’t real, etc, but people give him the benefit of the doubt because he doesn’t have the balls to say it in real life. I don’t think people realise the digital footprint they leave.

We need to enhance disinformation defenses, including stronger state coordination and digital literacy. Need to have a harsher consequence to blatant disinformation. People need to call out the lies as well, not by getting emotional but laying out facts. The person you’re replying to might not accept them but others will also be reading the replies.
Tighten bot detection and mitigation policies at key digital interfaces, it’s fucking crazy how many bots are here on our SM.
Strengthen cyber resilience for critical systems during high-risk periods like elections.

There should be social media bans given to these mala head “citizen journalists”, there’s a lad that keep popping up on my tiktok feed “daznews” or something, he’s an absolute fool, amplifys anything immigration related, was claiming 7 people where shot in carlow as he was driving down to the scene to get more information. This clown was crying on tiktok about a year ago because the very people he’s in with now where abusing him for being a government plant 😂

Your man “this is Dublin” aswell, complete scumbag drug dealer now acting like he saving irelands women and children from the scary immigrants, doubt he cared too much when he was selling heroin to kids in dublins inner city

    11. Misinformation fosters in an opaque police and justice system. Data protection laws are interpreted in a heavy handed manner and sometimes associated with conveniency and saving face.
I think Ireland is severely lacking in this regard. It’s not the only problem of course but it’s one I rarely see being talked about.

    12. I regret adding to his view count but I watched a bit of Philip Dwyer’s live stream from the scene in which he was saying that there were several casualties, including a little girl who had “been shot”.

He was describing it as the biggest story in Ireland in several years – but after the news came out that the shooter was a white Irish guy, he ended his live stream precisely 13 minutes later.

      Gobshite.

    13. Margrave75 on

“When will de irish people wake up and see whats happening. The guy killed in carlow was brought their by garda and shot as cover up. It was a black lad that did it and now his been moved to a different town and will be able to kill next time”

Direct copy + paste from the local “says no” fb page here.

    14. RainFjords on

I come from nearby. I watched with absolute gobsmacked horror at how quickly the misinformation spread. I mean, on FB the usual wans were shrieking about the shooter being an evil undocumented refugee, and there were people replying, “I saw him, he’s Irish.” “I seen the body he’s Irish” etc. … but that was ignored. When the shooter’s face was posted on FB – sigh – the same wans were weeping about this beautiful misunderstood soul, a victim of the mental health crisis in Ireland.

      You couldn’t make it up.

There should be AI tools now with all social media platforms that fact check posts before they’re approved to go online.

Especially if someones photo or name/address is attached to the post, the claim should be fact checked and approved or else deleted

You should not be able to post a picture of someone or something and claim x y and z about it, and then have this post shared to millions of people

Media company should be held fully responsible without them being fact checked

    16. MackAttack3214 on

Find it hilarious that RTE would post an article about misinformation.

    17. Admirable-Farmer-665 on

Maybe I’m too cynical, but I feel like the people who spread misinformation on purpose and fall for it aren’t going to listen to RTE since its run by like pedophile lizards or whatever

    18. Lonely_Eggplant_4990 on

In most of these cases, lot of the rumour mill and speculation could be erased if the gardai and rte were more forthcoming with known facts. Eg, if someone has been arrested or charged with an offence a brief unidentifying description such as sex, age and nationality should be included. The omission of this data is literally working in the favour of the far right as they can spin stories which grow legs.
