[Council tax](https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/explainers-63635185) may be the most regressive forms of taxation in this country, perhaps more so than VAT and other duties. It going up by 20% by the end of this parliament is absolutely eye-watering for the poorest families in the UK.

How the fuck are we meant to afford all these price rises in shit we’re legally obligated to pay?
hgjayhvkk on
Looking through amount of taxed I’m paying lately. Capital tax. Stamp duty. Council tax. It’s as if they want to box me in.
Now I did some research yesterday on Dubai. Not that I want to move there. But to understand why some are moving there besides the burning hot weather.
No CGT in Dubai. No council tax. 4% flat stamp duty. Is that correct?
Edit: I’m sure there are other countries with less aggressive taxation. Dubai just came to my mind.

What’s the chance they take away the single occupancy discount thing?

Oh good. Love to pay more money for something that never improves.

Interesting to see how Reform will deal with this. Given they got elected on a promise to freeze council tax.
Anticipating they absolve responsibility, and blame Starmer for them having to raise it

I’m old enough to remember this Labour Party campaigning a year ago, promising “no tax increases for working people”. Since then, council tax has gone up sharply, as has national insurance. Meanwhile, the forecasts are only for more council tax rises, to fund the government’s ever expanding coffers

Mine is going up by 4% this year, so silver lining I guess.

My council tax is already £2000 a year. We’re a low income family, on universal credit, with a disabled child and we’re not entitled to any reductions.
I’m a low grade civil servant and my wages won’t be going up 5%. How do we afford to live?
Remarkable_Misty on
Hang on starmer promised no rise in council tax wtf?

Mine has gone up £120 a month since we moved in 8 years ago. £165 to now £288 a month.

What do we expect? We repeatedly vote for neoliberal parties so we get decreasing living standards despite paying more.
Anyone who goes against the above is called woke or a communist or something.
Important_Ruin on
Luckily Reform won’t be raising my council tax? That’s what they said during local elections.

Let’s also not forget how hyper aggressive they are in chasing debt. Miss a month and with in 4 weeks they can demand a whole year. Still don’t pay and you can expect baliffs within another 6 weeks.

Quick reminder we wasted £104.9bn of taxes in 2024 on government debt interest payments. Don’t worry though, I’m sure these additional tax rises will be spent well.

I might be in the minority, but I don’t mind these increases for council tax. What I mind are the excessive energy and water companies charging me a fortune when they are raking in record profits. The council are skint and not making a profit, so I understand. The energy companies and water companies are taking the piss though.
XenorVernix on
This was already expected. Time to vote the councillors out and replace them with a party that spends our money better.

Property and land value tax when?
Oh wait, that would mean rich people in Kensington would have to pay but they’ll just make some bs up about poor pensioners getting fucked by it

Yay !! I was starting to feel the benefit of having my pay restored with my recent pay rise……. we really are circling the drain at this point.

Disingenuous from Labour to campaign on a no tax rises for working people platform, only to get crafty and increase statutory costs in an obfuscating way. The cuts to LGAs in this past spending review directly impact council tax rises. They may not be increasing income tax directly, but indirectly they are forcing us to pay more anyway.
Now, I don’t disagree with the need for public investment in services. I do have a problem with Government saying one thing, then doing another and planning to shift the political blame to LGAs in the process.

3% wage rise for my company this year and all bills still going up over 5%.
Council taxes are completely wasted by councils who try to make huge financial decisions with no knowledge or background in the field they are looking into.
Should go back to parish councils where at least the local taxes went into the area you live…

Why not just bring capital gains in line with income tax?

this is getting ridiculous and we dont get any improved services for all these cost rises

I mean the Scottish council area I live in put ours up a whopping 14% all while reducing the amount of bin collections in the month just in April!
Councillors also gave themselves a nice wee pay uplift so I’m sure the rises are more than justified
pleasantstusk on
I’m sure those of us in the Kirklees area will love paying 5% more for absolutely nothing

5% a year is the limit before they have to ask either local voters to accept it (curiously no council wants to do that) or get “special permission”, which IIRC has never been denied

More money for social care. Remove the cap on capital assets for social care cost coverage.
vaguelypurple on
It wouldn’t be quite as bad if everything wasn’t fucked. But for that price increase you just get more potholes, less bin collections, services closing down, bus services cut etc… where’s the money actually going? Cus it doesn’t feel like it’s going towards improving anything!

Unless the government revoke local authorities’ statutory obligations for social care and SEND transport to schools, every single local authority will go bankrupt in the next few years. Every single one. Absolute madness of a decision.
AdAggressive9224 on
I feel that we need to means test access to adult social care. Sorry, but *yes* you *should* have to sell your home to pay for your care if you can’t afford it. It’s not right to ask people who don’t have the luxury of owning their own home to pay for your care for you. That’s just stealing from the poor and giving to the (asset) rich.
tiny-robot on
Its only 5% for those whose councils don’t go bust.
For those unlucky enough to live in one of those areas – it will likely be higher. Bradford was 10% for example.

And they wonder why popularism is on the rise, young people feel doomed with climate change, their futures in doubt, and now they have the government spitting in their eyes yet again.
How about they actually think instead of taxing an already a dying middle class. Reform is going to sail through at this rate
