Reports that a number of business premises closed in Newbridge in the wake of the death of a member of the travelling community have been described as “blatant discrimination”.
Self-preservation, more like.
Pubs are profit driven enterprises so they do not deny themselves trading hours for a very logical reason. That’s why middle ireland people will deny SF the levers of power with this BS- we’re not fucking naive. Stop pissing down our backs and tell us it’s raining…

It’s always been this way. Pubs close for “private events” or “essential maintenence” when there’s a big traveller funeral in town
I worked in pubs for 17 years back in the day. Closing up because of a traveller event/funeral was common practice
My brother ran a pub for the last few years. And him like most pubs simply closed on a the day of a few big traveller funerals.
The lost profit of the day closed was cheaper than the potential cost if they were open.
Guards would typically advise pubs to stay closed on the day of a Traveller funeral off the record, of course. Any Pub not heading the advice would find themselves the subject of extra care and attention for the next 6 months.
The only thing surprising in that article was it is Sinn Fein complaining rather than Pavee Point. Not exactly a big vote winning issue there!
Unfortunately too many times I’ve witnessed so much destruction it’s not worth the risk. We had pubs in England and the whole town would shut down
Sinn Féin will never be in government spouting this Performative Left bullshit, they’re just gaslighting. Everyone knows the true reason most of the pubs are closing and it’s not because they don’t respect ‘people who travel’
>Sinn Fein representative for Newbridge James Stokes said the travelling community “deserves respect”
Tell you what, the Sinn Fein rep can provide blanket unlimited business insurance on his own wallet to these businesses to ensure that even if something does happen, everyone is happy and squared away.
If he’s correct, he has nothing to worry about. And if he doesn’t want to do that, well he’s just discrimatory too then isn’t he?
The mad thing about this is there’s a shrine built in the spot where this lad died, on a very bad blind bend between Newbridge and Naas. Three times this week there’s be either a jeep stopped in the road, or people standing there. Very dangerous and bit mad. All I can think is why would you congregate in a dangerous location where someone from your family died as a result of said danger, and also put other people at risk.
Worked in a hotel for years.
Did a grand total of two traveller weddings. One was grand.
The other was absolute fucking carnage. Shandaliers ripped off ceilings, tables smashed, glasses thrown. A fella was thrown through the conservatory window. The night ended with one fella getting glassed and he seemed concussed so I carried him the short walk up the hill to the local garda station. Only to find the fuckers had abandoned it.
Perhaps it’s time for some soul searching
